No LNK Patch for XP SP2

MS is sticking to its guns so far.

Quote:
Computerworld - Although some had hoped that Microsoft would violate its own patching policy, the company yesterday stuck to its guns and declined to provide a fix for a critical bug to users running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
On Monday, Microsoft shipped an emergency patch for the Windows shortcut bug that attackers have been exploiting for several weeks. The vulnerability affects all versions from Windows 2000 on, including XP, Vista and Windows 7.
But, per Microsoft's practice, the oldest operating systems and service packs were denied the update.
"To be crystal clear, there is no security update for XP SP2," said Microsoft spokesman Christopher Budd in a Webcast on the out-of-band patch that he hosted Monday afternoon.

Same reason that they patch for Vista SP1 and Vista SP2. Just with XP, anything older than SP3 is unsupported. Not everybody quickly moves to a service pack...but we probably don't want unpatched vulnerabilities lurking.

Not really, unless you know what and how to block the vulnerability described in KB2286198 with your Anti-Virus program.

Best bet is to update to SP3 and IE8, if you're using XP.

It's not like SP3 is hard to find. Hundreds of websites have the download for it. I can't guarantee all of those sites should be trusted, but their are plenty that can. If you want the patch, just upgrade to SP3. It might take awhile to install, but it not like its going to hurt you in any way.

I wish Microsoft could release a patch or something for window 7 and give it a luna port/theme of window xp. I miss the appearance of window xp. Classic theme looks way too old, which I'm using. Aero...too flashy to me...sighhh....I wish I could go back to Window xp, but no...BSOD....I've analyzed a lot of BSODs but I couldn't solve my BSODs

Custom themes would probably be the best bet for you. I've seen a couple XP like themes out for Vista and 7.
