Windows 8 Will Be the Beginning of the End for 7

    Posted: 14 Aug 2010
The general availability (GA) of Windows 8 will trigger the start of the end of sales for Windows 7, in accordance with the Windows Life Cycle Policy modifications announced the past week by Microsoft. Having detailed the modifications to the way in which it sells Windows, the Redmond company went on to revamp the Windows Life Cycle Policy webpage. The new site offers information on Windows Desktop License Availability, Windows Support, Windows Downgrade Rights, and License Availability Roadmap. At this point in time the software giant is not offering any details related to Windows 8, the next major version of Windows, but it is easy to see that the context also applies to the successor of Windows 7.

Sounds like MS doesn't want to leave another operating system on the table for 10+ years like XP.

Pretty much. They kind of shot themselves in the foot with that one. Though with Vista, it has become quite clear that the old OS is left in the dust. Anyone out there see any new Vista desktops for sale in stores anymore?

Can't blame them, I don't think anybody expected XP to last this long...(I sure didn't) and it hurts the growth of new technologies that come into the market...

I won't be dumping 7 any time soon but will likely end up with another dual boot!

Presently I'm recoverying an image for the second Vista drive there until something better comes along or the board in the old build finds it's old home for the previous version once again!

(Gee does that mean Drive #2 can test W8 Beta?)

It depends on what driver model they use and how the development goes but I doubt Microsoft would want Episode II - How Vista Strikes Back!

All this time it thought it would be called the second sequel to XP III! "The Old Empire Strikes Back!" but XP already got it's SP3 instead!

Using the comparison many have in the past, this would make it ME III - Revenge of the Vista!

No, but Vista is still available by itself, and its EOL likely won't come for a long while yet.

Vista isn't a bad version like the ME flop! as it was called back then. Most of the problem was simply MS "not" having raised the actual minimum requirements up enough when trying to push sales instead after the delays seen in it's release.

That's also why XP has had this long of extended life but will no longer being seeing anything new as far as updates. Commercial interests however see extended support until 2014.
