Yep - just thinking about the future :)

don't mean there better, because there a masive part of dell and dell are the biggest selling computers.
i reakon its half and half with system builders. I myself have never touched intel, prob never will.
    That depends on the chip.

Realistically, for certain tasks, some intel chips do outperform and are better than their AMD counterparts.

(I'm not starting a intel vs AMD debate. I've no interest in that.)

And intel is like Microsoft and Apple - they aren't going away any time soon

awww bye bye ati, can we see intel go now please that will never happen
Yes, it will never happen, because Intel dominates the market, like it or not.

I didn't say they were better (although I personally prefer Intel). In cases like this, it doesn't really matter who's better, it matters which one sells more. Everyone's going to have their own opinion, which is why this stuff goes by "market share", and not by some arbitrary quality rating that would be seen differently by every analyst.

You are correct about Intel and Dell, and the logic goes like this: Lots of people prefer Dell computers. Most (if not all) Dell computers have Intel processors. Therefore, lots of people prefer Intel processors.

If they did not like Intel processors, that would translate into not liking Dell computers. Kind of like how the typical user blames Windows for any/all problems they may have with their computer, when it's often hardware or other software that's messed up.

Bottom line is: more people use Intel. As long as more people use Intel, they'll be sticking around, regardless of who thinks AMD is "better".

I heard a guy in Best Buy the other day telling a couple that AMD CPUs had notoriously higher clock speeds, but that Intel's were better.

I chuckled to myself and walked away.

I never take recommendations when it comes to hardware brands for this very reason. Just because more people use X doesn't mean X is better. It also doesn't mean X is what's right for me.

I always had a hard time understanding why so many people would by a Dell rather then build their own systems. Dell uses the cheapest parts and cuts so many corners even with the fact that you have a few selected options to build one off their website.

I do think that the AMD brand name will really gain from dropping the ATI logo. I am sure that they are doing what ever they can to get more sales and with the global economy so messed up, anything to save a buck is good.
On the other note, this makes me think that BP should drop their logo.

I've never built a system in my life, I always buy them from OEMs like Dell, I just don't have the electronics gene. I prefer to spend as little time as possible messing around with stuff just to make it work. My experience with Dell and Sony both, indicates that their computers are very high-quality at the end of the day.

I suppose only time will tell whether this move by AMD does any good.

Most people will assume that the combination of the two, now being both AMD, will provide a better product and there by promoting more sales.
    +1*2 Couldn't agree more

Hit it on the nail, this is exactly why they've done it.

at the end of the day it boils down to what you are familer with. I myself started with amd, and liked it, then i was impressed with a friend with another amd so i got a computer with the same cpu as it, then i built a pc with phenom quad core. I can understand why people like intel.
But as for gpu's im not a fan of any, i like both nvidia and amd. at the momment i have Nvidia because i heard good things about the 460 series and the 5 series ATI were having problems at the time, plus ati cards in a few games were being beaten by inferior nvidia cards like borderlands.
But who knows, when the new 6xxx series comes out from a new branded "ATI" boxed product, i will really be looking into these.
