Not to mention the many people that even to this day still don't even bother to install AV Protection or just let the demo that came with their new PC lapse. Something is better than nothing.

What they didn't mention is MSE includes the Windows Defender engine and difinitions and adds the Anti-virus engine so that is why it disables the standalone Windows Defender. You don't loose it you just gain an anti-virus also and is run in a different package. I use Avast Anti-virus and also run Windows Defender.

This is not a discovery.
Like Phone Man is saying, MSE = Windows Defender + AV. It includes WD engine.
However, I'm curious to know how 2.0 engine is using hardware resources, because 1.x engine was relatively huge when opening session, file scan or definition update (until 150 MB of memory & 50-75% CPU usage during several minutes).

Yeah, this is old news. But yeah, Windows Defender is really just like Windows Security Essentials Lite/Starter, so no harm done. (Though I can envision some less experienced users freaking out over this news.)

Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 and MSE 2.0 will disable the free security solution that ships by default with every Windows operating system.
This means that customers running Microsoft Security Essentials have no need for Windows Defender. In fact, Windows Defender is pushed to the background and switched off by MSE.
And fact is that customers choosing between the two should prefer MSE for a very simple reason. However basic MSE is, it is still a complete antivirus product vs. Windows Defender, which is designed as antispyware and nothing more.
“If you use Microsoft Security Essentials, you don't need Windows Defender,” revealed Microsoft’s Marcelle Amelia.
“When you download Microsoft Security Essentials, it will turn off (but not uninstall) Windows Defender automatically. It does this so that you don't have two programs on your computer that are doing the same thing.”
“If you ever decided to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Defender will be turned back on again,” Marcelle added.
The Redmond company continues to offer MSE 1.0 as a free download for customers running genuine copies of Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
