PCI Express 3.0 to go final in November

    Posted: 17 Sep 2010
The PCI Special Interest Group (PCI SIG) says it expects to finalize the PCI Express (PCIe) 3.0 standard by November 2010. The 3.0 specification is due in the fourth quarter of 2010, but now we know it's slated for 60 days after the PCI SIG released version 0.9, which was posted in mid-August, according to EE Times. Furthermore, Intel is already gearing up to implement the new high-speed interconnection into its Sandy Bridge processors for servers.

This is only the initial startoff for PCIe 3.0. It will still take a few years for hardware manufacturers to work things out and come out with the new product lines to be seen.

As far as W8 even having a 128bit version that remains to be seen when the time comes. The 128bit referred to in the article is for programmers and support to be worked out with existing versions of Windows as far as updates for Windows and driver support for video cards.

I can imagine some gamers will be looking forward to the double bandwidth over 2.0 to be seen.

Whats the main advantage to this? I didn't think we were near the bandwith limit on PCIe 2.0, let alone 2.1 or 3.0. Then again, I should probably read the article, lol.

The real benefits will be unlocking the vpu potentials even further as well as speeding processing time up considerably. There's still a lot of vpu power going to waste on most systems since the typical pc game and multimedia app doesn't fully tap everything.

For enhancements in HD graphics and other things this will be a large step in the progression for unleashing more of the raw power for various applications. Simply compare what you have now to some old AGP 4x 128gb card to get a better idea of what this will mean. You'll soon be saying" "I'm glad not to be stuck with that old stuff any longer!"

It takes a while from being designated as a standard to being offered as a standard.

USB 3.0 is available as a new standard as well without the 3.0 devices being widely seen at this time. That's one standard already here but nor made default while the PCIe 3.0 is still a couple of years off for that being introduced.

By the time PCIe 3.0 and USB 3.0 and SATAIII get fully implemented in the new chip sets and Windows 8 is released, I will be ready for a new system. Then there is LightPeak by Intel (fiber connection for peripherals).
    Maybe 2-3 yrs
