What's Microsoft's role in the Novell-Attachmate deal?

Why can't Novell just die? And why does Microsoft want anything to do with them?

Background: I was loyal to Novell (CNE), but they blew it on so many different levels. Let's see, they wouldn't create a GUI at first, made their own version of DOS, purchased Word Perfect, overcharged for their product, rested on their laurels, got into Linux too late (Apple did too, but they fared far better), wouldn't create a client for Vista/Win 7 until too late, well you get the idea.
