Virgin Media has taken its 100Mbps united kingdom

Virgin Media has taken its 100Mbps service live now in four parts of the country(UK), the lucky areas are:

    • Heckmondwike
    • Farnborough
    • Colchester
    • Barry, South Wales

The roll-out will continue across the Virgin Media cable network during 2011 with completion set for 2012, at which point almost half the UK will have the option for a 100Meg service at a reasonable price point. The 10Meg upstream speed is respectable, and given powerful enough video encoding solutions would allow someone at home to transmit video at current HD TV levels.

hope this means a price adjustment for the lower bandwidths..

their deals are great to begin with, but soon become expensive with all the attendant charges..

don't be fooled. Those are package prices. Size L is £25 on its own or £18 with XL TV (Which is my package). You only get that price with TV, Phone line and Call plan.

    Hi there
this might be fine for DOWNLOADS but what about UPLOAD speed and also with these types of service they will eventually start capping Bandwidth which will increase your bill MASSIVELY..

Corporate Greed knows no bounds in the current economic climate -- not wanting to get Political but just look at the HUGE profits from UK GAS / ELECTRICITY suppliers which went up MASSIVELY but the poor consumer suddenly at the start of Winter is having to pay out massively more. Strangely enough the only one who (still) seems reasonable is the French EDF which hasn't raised prices (yet) athough if I were a UK citizen I would feel a bit nervous about having such a basic commodity as Energy supply held in foreign ownership.

Rate of Dollar VS pound if HIGH then they say Currency conversion costs account for the rise, if LOW they say the opposite -- stuff is priced in USD so you have to pay more and they say cost of GAS is related to cost of OIL which is TOTAL and UTTER B/S.

Poor old consumer ALWAYS loses out.

I'd stick with the old UNCAPPED tariff's for as long as possible -- you don't need anything like 100 mbs for Internet even with HD movies.

This is a bit like the old MP (Mega Pixels) argument that we saw when digital cameras first appeared.

There were some older PRO DSLR models which nominally had far fewer MP's than a lot of the smaller hand held Point and Shoot models -- but you didn't need to be a Pro photographer to recognize instantly which camera could take better pictures.

As a consumer it ALWAYS PAYS to be extremely cynical these days or you will get hosed up royally.

    Cheers

Yes. I am currently on Virgin's L package which at 10Mb download and 1Mb upload is, at the moment, adequate for my needs.
