First Patch for Windows 7 SP1 RTM Will Fix Critical Vulnerability

Quote:

In less than a month after the general availability deadline of Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Microsoft is preparing to release the first update designed to resolve a Critical security vulnerability in the upgraded copies of Windows Vista’s successor.

As part of the company’s normal patch cycle, this month’s security bulletins will be released on March 8th at 10:00 a.m. PST.

Only customers running Windows and Office will need to apply the patches, with those leveraging the operating system having to treat one of the security bulletins as a priority when it comes down to deployment.

“This month we'll release three bulletins, one of them rated Critical and two rated Important, addressing issues in Microsoft Windows and Office. We'll close four vulnerabilities with those bulletins,” revealed Angela Gunn, security response communications manager, Microsoft.

Not to nitpick (at MS, not at you, JMH), but how many updates has 7 (or for that matter, Vista) gotten that were labeled as "Critical" on Windows Update? I know MS has 1 or 2 or more updates labeled as Critical every month in their monthly Patch Tuesday report, but when the updates show up on Vista/7 Windows Update, they seem to be downgraded to "Important".

Would you rather them just ignore holes in security when they find them and give out the update to patch them months later or never? Gimme a break.

It may be the first, but I'm sure that it won't be the last.

The biggest issues are that there are 1000s (if not 10,000s) of people out there writing Virus/Malware apps to combat certain security systems. They are also writing new codes to take advantage of most other apps that people use on a daily basis (Office, Browsers etc.). MS are having to write new updates to combat the ever evolving Virus/Malware programmers.

I for 1 am thankful to receive these updates sooner rather than later

They could just save up the critical ones and release them as a service pack!
More interesting that way!

While in the meantime, hackers are gaining control over more and more of our systems

Well said Jeff, I agree it's better to have the updates as soon as possible rather than leave them causing more damage.
