Microsoft must do better on Windows 7 pricing despite 3 user pack!

The current half price upgrade deal in the US runs out on July 11, but Microsoft has promised more deals to come, while licensing terms indicate a 3 user license “family pack” for Win 7 is coming at last – but as always, is it enough?!
With Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade (US $49.99) still No.1 in Software at Amazon’s “Bestsellers in Software” category, and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade (US $99.99) in the No.2 spot, demand for these two Windows 7 upgrade versions, at the current half price special, is proving very popular - especially as the deal is ending soon.

The more expensive Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade edition (US $219.99), which isn’t on a “half-price” sales special, clocks in at No.15 on the list, while what looks like a full edition of Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard ($129.99 but on sale at $108.99) is listed at No.21.

Seeing as Mac OS X 10.5 has come with Macs for at least a year now, and as OS X always comes with a Mac, buyers are presumably from a base of OS X 10.4 or earlier upgraders who can’t wait for the attractively priced OS X 10.6 $29 upgrade in a few months time (or due to PowerPC architecture, can’t run it), and perhaps also some of those creating “Hackintoshes”, running OS X on non-Apple hardware, who at least want a genuine copy of the OS over a pirated one.

It will be very interesting to see what the levels of Windows 7 sales change to once the July 11 specials are over and Win 7 upgrade prices are doubled back to recommended retail pricing, but Microsoft’s sales specials will continue.

July 11’s price reversals will possibly be overshadowed by the fact Windows 7 goes RTM on July 13, but perhaps a new Microsoft sales special will quickly emerge.

iTWire - Microsoft must do better on Windows 7 pricing despite 3 user pack!

They really need to step it up in pricing. People are just not going to tolerate this. Single users (the average guy) might, but not big corps. And that is a big source of revenue....

Big Corps, who have hundreads or thousands of seats get GREAT deals for MS pricing in volume lisence deals or enterprise deals (I work for one those big corps who gets those deals), and actually, that isnt that big a revenue as you might think. Its the support deals that are big revenue.

While I dont work on the windows side, IBM does basically the same thing with our AIX setup.

Why does everyone complain about Microsoft pricing?

Apple charges premium prices for their overrated underwhelming hardware that fall apart in blink of an eye. With Microsoft, you have hundreds of PC manufacturers competing against eachother and make great looking low priced, highpowered computers and with Windows, you get it "free" with the PC for the almost the same price of Windows by itself, or you create your own "Super" computer for almost the same price of Windows by itself and then buy Windows DVD for $200-$300 and you're still probably $500 less than what Apple charges and their wimpy overrated UNIX OS that's gonna die in the year 2030 or in that time frame.

Don't get what the big fuss is about...

blah, that article is a joke... 29 dollars for an update... I feel bad for the Mac folks. They dropped support for any non intel hardware and charged people to update to that! I don't care, that guy in the article sounds like a whiner...

    LordBob,

I work for a medium sized corp and we get great deals now. The really big boys, 10,000 seats and up have incredible deals.

We're a 5,000 seat corp and I believe (I don't get to see the numbers, just hear the accountants talk) but our Client + Office per seat price is somewhere around $55 - $85. Client is XP or Vista and Office is 2003 or 2007.

The corps are not complaining. They don't care about which version is out, as most of them have very open licensing agreements, so the available OS is whatever client OS is still being supported, i.e. XP, Vista or Win 7 when it comes out.

Nice. My point (I think) is till valid though. If they raise that price, they lose A LOT of customers (provided that they decide to switch and not pay that). It would still be a big revenue source though. If you buy 5000 copies for, say $75 each, thats a lot of money. Yeah, its a discount, but then you have a LOT of companies....

Here how that works. Say I bought the client + office software 2 years ago. With our contract, I think we pay an annual fee to maintain that license. That fee is very small, around $10/seat. When Win 7 is released, we can just downoad it and start using it, no additional cost. We are paying for a client seat, not a particular OS. That maintenance fee also goes towards enterprise support, it's just part of our IT budget and a fairly fixed cost. We have a separate hardware deal with HP, where we get desktops. laptops and servers with fixed life cycles and repair allowances.

And You get the RTM when released. You don't have to wait for it to hit shelves. At least My company does, and we have a similar pricing, so I presume most companies get access to it as well...

Correct. We won't because our IT group is a bunch of ##%$#%#%!!!!!! We're still on XP. I have a "special" arrangement with my local IT guy. He's in an office in LA (Los Angeles) and my office is about 60 Miles away. I help out with small issues around the office, so he doen't need to drive out here, and I get to install what I want on my laptop. No illegal software, of course, but I don't need to install the standard corp desktop. I get to play a bit.

He, of course, will not support my problems. If corp software doesn't run on my setup, I'm out of luck and better find a solution.

It works for me, I'm a happy geek and he gets to avoid traffic.
