although i suppose that win 7's rise is due to the amount of new pcs/laptops/netbooks being bought - and i would imagine the rest of the world doesn't buy new computers as much as the good old us of a.

so long xp, we 'loved' you longtime, but those days are gone...

Agree with you mm, but the US is behind the UK on Windows 7 passing XP.

Yes, but MS has got massive challenges.

The days of the old 90 per cent market dominance and ever rising share price are long gone.

They might be able to capture a chunk of the mobile market thru the alliance with Nokia - if they pitch it right.

The words Bolted , Horse and stable door spring to mind.

Strange, really - I believe ms were on the case ( with tablet type devices ) 10 years back - don't know how they managed to miss the boat.

this is great news

when I see XP machines, I think 'sigh, get with the times and move on'. Yes, XP was an awesome OS, but it's time has been and gone. I often have full-time Linux users whining at me "eurgh, it's so featureless" oh yeah? well let's look at the state of Linux ten years ago. People need to learn that Windows 7 is their current attempt, as is IE8 (IE9 is a featureless firefox 4 ripoff). Let's continue in our global effort to get XP and IE6 off people's machines

It's set to take over XP overall at the end of the month, or if not, next month.

About time. I was in the minority as I was never a fan of XP. I hung on to Windows 2000 until about 2004 (when XP SP2 came out) then jumped to Vista right away upon its release.
