    Mozilla to Force FF Update

    Posted: 16 May 2011
Computerworld - Mozilla plans to push 12 million users of the aged Firefox 3.5 to a newer version next month by taking the unprecedented step of automatically upgrading their browser.

Firefox 3.5, which debuted in mid-2009, is already on life-support: Mozilla gave users their last version 3.5 security patches three weeks ago.

And pushing me even more to Chrome.

One of my biggest peeves is auto-update software.

I'm with you. Although it mentions 3.5, the day they force me up from my 3.6.6 to 4 so I can no longer use "themes" is the day I dump it.

I don't think that day is far off. They are at 4 now and plan to release 5 soon. It's free, so they have little interest in supporting anything old.

I think they should just leave the 3.5 users alone, let them continue using it, and just drop support.

No problem for me. See no reason in maintaining less secure 3.5. Its a bit like using last years virus definitions.

And the only way you can stop auto-update of chrome is to use a portable version.

...another reason why i use chromeplus

and when you do update, it keeps an old_chrome.exe available for use too.

(...although at the moment, there are a couple of minor bugs in taskbar previews in latest version...)

My Chrome doesn't auto-update. Go into MSConfig.exe and uncheck the google/chrome autoupdate under the startup tab.

Ah yes! Didn't think of that, but then I don't mind the auto update as I run the beta anyway.

I know that some, though maybe not all Firefox "themes" are available in 4.x as Extensions/Addons.
