How Microsoft thinks about innovation these days (in five slides)

    Posted: 12 Aug 2011

Microsoft has overhauled its innovation pipeline from both a technology and process standpoint. Here are five slides that explain some of the changes made.

Microsoft has done a lot of rethinking and revising in the past couple of years as to how to bring innovations more quickly to market. But it wasn’t until a keynote presentation today that I understood how the Softies have been rejiggering the pieces to get concepts more quickly to market.

Hopefully this works out for Microsoft because they've had some awesome concept ideas that either never made it into market or got watered down. I for one, do not want to see another Windows Longhorn epic failure...

Missing an important slide- react to market trends.

Waiting 2 years to completely rework their mobile OS has put them where they are- in a blackhole.

Waiting 2 years to completely rework their tablet concept has left them in the dark in this market, as well.

Waiting years to push their search product has left them in the back seat.

I like Microsoft, have been a big MS fan for years, am MS certified and love a lot of their products, BUT they react and adopt too slowly, which is why they are failing.

These days, I'm moving more into Apple products and thoroughly enjoy the quality.

Unfortunately, that is true. But if blame is to be pointed out to one thing in their recent history, Windows Longhorn/vista. That was supposed to be just packed full of advanced features that only ended up being sparsely spanned into two operating systems.

    Hopefully Windows 8 changes that...

As much I hate to say it, Apple seems to be nailing things spot on left and right. Marketing: check. Innovation: check. End-user experience and demands: check. That is not to say that Microsoft isn't doing any of these things, but Apple has gained a niche in the market that is enourmous and hungry for the latest and greatest, and at the right time. At my college, I seem to see more people using those MacBooks than the cheapest PC's... I guess Apple has established this "let us show you our products, they are the future. You will love them, because you want to be the future and be the best."

    @Windows911:

What you just posted sounds like a stealth marketing ad.

Do you work for Apple or a related entity.

Innovation...no, Apple just "says" they innovate, ,most of what they have was um borrowed from an earlier idea innovated at another company.

The iDrones only think they are "cool" and "trendy" because the Apple ads tell them so.

Not really. Making a typical product to be more than what it really is just a regular marketing tactic. And making a phone or an mp3 player seem really, really cool is also typical adverting. Making a mockery of Windows vista is also simple marketing.

apple's main marketing strategy is being super secretive and seem exclusive makes people want to be part of it. It's like how facebook used to be exclusive, by invitation and that made people want to be part of it.
