Windows 7: Firefox To Drop Version Numbers Entirely

I agree it seems the "trend" is to distance the user from useful information about programs like browsers and the like.

I agree about the fact that auto updates in theory are great but mistakes are made in coding and things can break! Sure have the auto update as the default but make sure there is the option to manually update for those that want it. After all it doesn't really take any additional resources to do this, doesn't actually cost these software providers a thing and please ALL their users instead of just some.

Google also likes to auto update and I has an scheduled task that says it will check for updates every hour on the hour!!! I mean WTF!!! There is also another one that is a daily update as well. Not sure why the two listed in there though??? Anyone know why. Of course I disabled the auto update on Chrome.

Seems to be the wave of the future and is all find and dandy in theory. But that more or less assumes that you will never push any bugs or incompatibility ever again. It's bad enough in the normal release modes but you can generally then just go back a version and install that. But increasingly that's not even possible any more (I.e. on Android).

There's nothing worse than turning your computer on and firing up your browser to get some work done (ebay seller maybe?) then have your software autobreak itself just before needing to use it.

Updates should be manual so you can do them after your done working IF you are in the mood for dealing with the potential consequences...
Let me know if I am wrong but you can turn auto updating off in the options
There probably will be... at first. Course 99% of all users won't know about it.

On Android, the option for auto-updating is getting more forceful. Some apps update then auto update themselves from then on (Double Twist) and now for others the "Are you sure you don't want to turn on auto updating" is suddenly compeltely in your face in the new app store. Next rev?... Well it's clear where it's heading
Yeah, I've noticed that apps on my phone are automatically turning on the "automatic update" option. Creepy. I know I set everything to not auto update.

Like many are saying, if it comes to recieving support this will just cause further complications. I'm not looking forward to this and I'm certainly hoping that other programs do not follow the trend.

FF is getting overloaded with bloat. When I first used it, I thought it was great. If they don't do something about the bottlenecks caused by "Add Ons" that do not work after the constant 'Updates', I will vote with my cursor and switch.

C'mon, Mozilla, wake up and give FF a REAL cleanup!
