Firefox To Drop Version Numbers Entirely

Quote:
It is no secret that the purpose of browser version numbers have been called into question with the introduction of rapid release processes. Google already said that version numbers are irrelevant for the consumer, but Mozilla apparently wants to go a step further by removing them entirely from mainstream eyes.

Firefox is in decline.

I suppose that if one believes that they should always have the most current version of a program, and that they really don't need to know what to call it, then I guess that numbers would be irrelevant...but I'm not of that mindset.

The first thing that is required when asking for support - "What version are you running"
Come on Man - Don't get stuck on stupid.

You'll supposedly still be able to go into about:support and see the version number or just click on Troubleshooting Information in the same spot as About Firefox (unless they take that way also), but it's not going to be apparent on the surface.

Q: What version of FF are you using?
A: I don't know...it says the latest..

Go to Help in the Menu/Troubleshooting Information - which will take you to about:support or
Type about:support into your address bar/click OK on I'll be careful...blah blah blah

As long as the add-ons work with the new "unknown" versions of the software, I would be alright. What I don't like about the quick versioning changes is having to override the system to convince it an old add-on should still continue to function.

Yeah, when I read that I thought "for how long will you be able to do that?" If they are willing to take the version number out of the "About box," they won't hesitate to remove every trace of it down the road.

Won't be long before it goes the way of Netscape at this rate unfortunately.
