Microsoft Demos Windows 8 Boot Speed

Rather than closing both the user session and the kernel session like in a traditional shutdown, Windows 8 will preserve the kernel session on the disk, thus creating a "hiberfile" that's much smaller than that of the usual Windows hibernation -- see the diagram after the break for a clearer idea. The result? An amazingly fast system bootup -- even with the battery removed to begin with -- that claims to be 30 to 70 percent faster than most systems tested by Microsoft. We're itching to test this feature on an SSD ourselves, but until then, you can head over to MSDN's blog for the full technical explanation.

I'm sure there will be many great new features with W8 but that boot speed is crazy fast but I'm sure that rig has a ssd as well.... my guess.

Blazing fast boot and flash program start ups.......we truly live in an amazing day and age. The problem is we are never satisfied as we soon become normalized to the speeds and just demand/want for faster.

But that's the fun part, that means we will still innovate. Find new technologies to improve the old ones.

That would be the biggest gain that I could make. On my box, the time between the power button press and "Starting Windows" is longer than anything else.
