If Win 8 is another Vista - we'll be keeping Win 7

...it just works; if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I agree. This very well may turn out to be the new Vista. I'll wait and see what happens.

That's what really doesn't make sense to me.
Why are they creating a new one so quickly on the heels of what is quite possibly the best version of windows they've ever released.

Timeline of Microsoft Windows - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you look at the timeline, two years or less on any release is about average. Windows 7 just turned two years old and MS wants a better position in portable/mobile devices. Hence, Windows 8. Look for them to tout it as the OS for home and away. Microsoft develops software. Would you expect anything less as an investor?

Timelines are the bane of innovation and creativity.

look at any video game for which the original was earth shattering and the successive versions of it with ever increasing numbers following just get worse and worse.

This happens because the originals are published by the small game companies/studios which are immediately bought out by larger companies when they produce a hit.
EA is the biggest supplier of failure in this respect.

I'm considering going Linux. Windows is making me feel dumb.

I'm sorry man, but that has to be one of the most backwards things I have ever seen.

    ...and I'm from the internet.

    Hi there
Most of the complaints etc seem to originate from people who haven't tried it.

What W8 is for is to deploy Windows across other platforms such as Tablets, smart phones and other devices we might not have even thought of / invented yet.

With it's Metro UI look it will be familiar to most smart phone users - although you can run W8 in "W7" type of mode.

I suggest taking a peek at it (It's FREE) and load it up on a Virtual Machine. Download from MS -- nothing to pay and no activation required.

There's nothing wrong at all with W7 but running a "Classical" desktop OS on some of these newer devices poses a lot of problems which MS decided (probably wisely) to create a new OS -- based of course on the success of W7.

W7 isn't going away any time soon.

    cheers

Here are the Windows versions launch dates, average is 3 years.

    1. November, 1985 Microsoft Windows version 1.0 released
    2. April, 1987 Microsoft Windows version 2.0 released
    3. May 22, 1990 Microsoft launches Windows 3.0
    4. August 24, 1995 Microsoft launches Windows 95
    5. June 25, 1998 Microsoft launches Windows 98
    6. Feb. 17, 2000 Microsoft launches Windows 2000
    7. Oct. 25, 2001 Microsoft launches Windows XP
    8. Jan. 30, 2007 Microsoft launches Windows Vista
    9. Oct. 22, 2009 Microsoft launches Windows 7

It just seems like they're coming too fast because of the long time between XP and Vista.
With the advances in hardware improved OS are needed to take advantage of them.

Of coarse, the choice to use a new OS is, as always, up to the individual.

Curiosity always leads me to try a 'New OS', so far I have liked them all enough to use them.
