Windows 7: The Last Days of Windows 7

What I don't understand with you guys is we all know that Win 8 WILL have a traditional UI for the desktop, which my guess would be that it will be just a bit different from Win 7 desktop, so why the annoyance?

My only two questions are ....

1) How will having two UI selections affect the response on the new OS (slower or faster than Win 7) I would imagine that even if one of the UI is turned off it still might add some additional layer of code to the processes or not, can someone help me out on this.

2) Improving how reliable Windows Update is at cleanly installing updates without problems or failures on a system that is only has well known major programs on it and has not been compromised by Malware or had the registry screwed with by the owner.

WU just always seems to be the weak link IMO.

If anything I wish that MS would offer the user TWO methods of receiving a service pack..the traditional method of a single large update....or allowing by request the user to simply have access to the parts that make up the service pack in single updates or in a number of smaller increments ..

Windows 7 Professional 64bit

I used xp until earlier this year, after which I upgraded to win7. Glad I took my time to upgrade and skip the whole vista episode.

Win7 is snappy and supports latest hardware. I don't regret upgrading one bit. But does it make me more productive compared to xp, I don't think so. The fact we're using more and more web and 3rd party apps such as gmail, firefox, thunderbird, launchy and explorer++, has made the jump less jarring.

As more than one person has said, win8 is really win7 w/ tablet-friendly interface. So why would you want to upgrade on your desktop?

windows 8 seems to be microsoft trying to play catch up to apple's iPad (or is it iPod, iPood, iPeed, iPaid, iPhoney or some such) and it's touchy-feely fingerprint on high reflectivity glass no real mouse, no real keyboard mobile cell phone approach. i'll be sticking to a real OS, win7, for quite a while. c'mon microsoft. try originality not copying. it ain't broke. don't fix it. i have a 'smart' phone which is more difficult to actually make a phone call with than my older non-smart one. i do not need another one making believe it's a desktop pc. i also have a quite capable dedicated e-paper e-book reader that fits my pocket, non-wireless, usb loading, and not tied to amazon or applestore, so i can get my books anywhere and load them on the thing freely. i do not need wireless book purchasing while i am wandering around the streets of london or waiting for a train at paddington station. i've got enough pre-loaded to last me a few months already. i suspect win7 will still be around when the iFad has ended.

At this point, I feel like I'll have no problem patiently waiting for 8's release, since I'm so happy with 7 on my machines right now. But at the same time, I also have this strange feeling that the voice of my inner geek will grow louder and louder to the point where I will not be able to resist the urge to upgrade once that time comes, especially since by then we'll know more of the facts, we'll have a better idea of what 8's all about, and we'll have an increased appetite for something new in the OS department by that time.

You might want to do a little reading on the sister forum EightForums...

I think unless some major changes are made there are going to be a lot of unhappy desktop users. I hope I'm wrong and MS will make major changes.

I don't think Windows 7 looks all that bad, especially after installing a third party theme..

Hear hear!

TVs and Phones being touted as "smart" are misnomers.

Agreed. I love Aero. I absolutely abhor this minimalistic approach with Metro.

I just amonth ago gave up xp and went to seven. I think I will not be ready to switch again for some time. 7 so far seems pretty stable. Like every one else I will be interested to see what 8 has to offer. But I dont think it will be enough for me to make the change at least till its out a while and we see if its another vista. Like has already been mentioned they seem to have a pattern going. Every other os seems to be full of problems.

WIN7 x64 Home Premium SP1

I upgraded to 7 64x when I got a new Dell back in April, retiring my XP Dell to the rec room. I really like 7. From the moment I set it up I haven't had an anxious moment with it. I can't even visualize upgrading to 8 until it's out for a year or so if it's indeed better than 7.

My first days with a Windows 8 phone
I became adventurous and spent $79 for a Windows 8 phone. I said to myself what can you lose, I spent similar money for a USB stick. But what I can gain is some experience - as if I needed that at my age, LOL. My first impressions are mixed. There are really 3 parts to it. 1. The Nokia part...
