Adobe rushes out emergency fix for critical bug in Flash 9/21/11

Note: Apparently the link included in the article was pointing to the wrong version. I checked it this morning (9/23/11) & it looks like they fixed it. Those of you that did an update earlier, double check to make sure you're running the right version. For Windows it should be 10.3.183.10. The link below this paragraph will get you to the right update.

Security update available for Adobe Flash Player

    Release date: September 21, 2011

It might be wise to add Secunia to your arsenal of tools, it's free and keeps you informed of patches/updates that need to be applied.

Adobe Systems has issued an emergency update for its ubiquitous Flash Player that fixes a critical security vulnerability that attackers are actively exploiting to hack end user machines.

Code exploiting the universal XSS, or cross-site scripting, bug “is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an email message,” Adobe said Wednesday in a blog post. It said the bug has been identified as CVE-2011-2444 and was reported by someone from Google, but it didn't elaborate on the people or organizations being targeted in the attacks.

The unscheduled update came a day after Google released a new version of its Chrome browser that included “an update to Flash Player that addresses a zero-day vulnerability.”

The Flash vulnerability affects versions 10.3.183.7 and earlier for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Solaris and Flash 10.3.186.6 for Google's Android operating system for mobile phones. Those using recent versions of Flash on Windows or Mac OS X can install the upgrade automatically after being prompted by an auto-update mechanism, or they can upgrade manually by installing a file downloaded here. In some cases, those using Flash with multiple browsers must update more than once. Those wanting to know what version they're currently running should visit this page.

Android users can upgrade by browsing to the Android Marketplace on their handsets.

Wednesday's patch fixes at least five other vulnerabilities that made it possible for attackers to remotely executive code or steal potentially sensitive information on machines running Flash.

Yup that article writer is daft. The download link provided is an older version than the one with the vulnerability.

i dont suppose this has anything to do with the issue my son had last week when he updated flash (when prompted) then ended up with 5 viruses, it corrupted so much the only thing left was a factory install, but the recovery partition was corrupt also and after it was restored would freeze on the start up animation screen ,followed by a blue screen, we formatted the entire drive and clean installed 7 and replaced the drivers for his laptop. after much frustration and he lost his music files .
    the lesson for him was
1- to create a recovery disc. (he didnt the first time )
2- store his media and personal files on an external.

the lesson for me was not to trust that he had followed my instructions regarding the initial set up of his laptop.

For years now they have offered free software along with Flash downloads. You can uncheck it.

Yeah, I noticed that they offer that or McAfee along with it. Sometimes it sits off to the side, as if they try to sneak it in.

That's another advantage of using Secunia, you click on the fix, it will d/l the main package right to your desktop. Launch it & it's installed, none of this d/l ing an installer & then having to d/l the upgrade.
