Microsoft Removes Gold Certified Partner Over Telephons Scam Claims

Quote:

As illustrated in this topic on the Microsoft Answers forum, the issue of fake tech support telephone calls has been a problem for over two years. The scams appeared to have originated in the U.K., spread to Australia, followed by Canada and the United States.

Although reports in various forum topics have pointed fingers at other vendors, in the instant case, the finger was pointing at "Comantra" who was a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner.

Comantra, like other vendors, was said to have cold-called people, implying that they represent Microsoft. After convincing the call recipients that the errors seen in Event Viewer on Windows are dangerous, the technicians would attempt to convince the people to allow the technicians to have remote access to their computer. Repairs, of course, required a credit card charge.

It would seem to me, that people would treat anyone making such claims, without invitation, exactly the same way that they would someone knocking on their door, offering a "service" they didn't ask for...just say no. Of course, with a computer, one also wants to know where such people got their address.

Public hanging in front Microsoft's head quarters sounds about right to me.

essenbe,

I don't foresee that happening, because it seems that the only time that one manufacturer will take another to court is when they infringe on their patents or copyrights. In cases such as this, it seems that all that can be expected is a slap on the hand, and a bit of public reprimand.

I remember reading threads where you guys trolled those /b/tards ... good going .. sickening how they scammed the elderly and the layman. Good to know MS did something but they should be taken to court as well for fraud.

Sounds about right to me. I'm a great believer in short sentencing - 24 hours in prison then hang 'em.
