Oh... I know, believe me I know. No need to ask how I know
Well I'll tell my story... the quick and simple

I've always had multiple drives in my system so one day I'm going to format a newly installed drive.... I instead wound-up wiping the primary hard drive..... and everything on it

They only thing that made life bearable was that I had older copies of data scattered throughout CD's and hard drives. Still lost a lot of data though. After that.... I learned the valuable lession of doing backups on an regular basis, and backing up anytime I do major maintenance

So yeah, always backup that data you need/want

Anyway this thread is about the demise of gadgets so we'll keep it there

I've never liked it either and was one of the first things that I disabled.

The irony is I did have OS backups covering that period, but because I didn't check every directory and I was running out of space I deleted them.
I generally only keep a 2 or 3 months worth of OS backups.

My personal files are on a separate partition and I have monthly backups dating back to April 2009 (when I first started playing with the W7 betas).

I don't use the standard W7 gadgets anyway (and I haven't rebuilt my Rainmeter display).

AVG always tries to install some useless gadget when I do a clean install.
It already installs a desktop icon (without my permission) and I have "Start Menu" shortcut and "Sys Tray" icons.

I see that a small number of gadget developers moved to CodePlex, as Microsoft itself advises people to do.

Notably, e.g. the Hermes RSS gadget.

It's a pretty decent gadget hosting platform, maybe even better than the live gallery - if only more people knew about it! And it is offered by Microsoft free of charge.

    ...

By the way, I asked this question in another thread, but no one noticed, so I'll ask it again here - could anyone confirm that Microsoft has unbroken the Calendar gadget with one of the recent IE9 updates? Has anyone else had a broken Calendar, like me, which is now fixed permanently and reliably works as expected?

So that you know your question was seen.... I don't use the calender gadget so I can't say.

Anyway the only gadget I liked was the Notes gadget from Vista. I actually had it working on 7 but since resintalling my OS last year I've yet to set it up again. I did post a how to somewhere here awhile back but I'll have to find it to see what I did to get it working again.

    Yes! Here it is....... https://www.sevenforums.com/gadgets/8...s-win-7-a.html

I don't understand people's attitude: desktop gadgets are useful. I use the weather, clock, multiple RSS feeds, Top 5 memory processes, Top 5 CPU processes, Google calender, Earth phase, moon phase, translation lookup, Wolfram Alpha lookup, multiple radio streams, etc., etc. All information easily accessible with Windows Key + G

Probably Microsoft wanted to reduce the expense involved in reviewing submissions to its Windows Gadgets web site, and perhaps they no longer fit in with its plans for Windows 8.

I think that the awful Metro Tiles are supposed to replace the gadgets.
