I predict to less than 7%. In other words regain everything lost by Vista's bad rep and then some.But the real story behind those figures is Apple's meteoric rise in the market. Just one year prior, in December 2007, Apple controlled just 7.3 percent of the operating-system space--a record at the time.

What I find interesting is that there are a few reviews out there that say W7 still as slow as Vista and that is simply not true - before reading any reviews the first thing I noticed what the fact that windows 7 is fast, snappy and boots much faster.
Then, nearly all the reviews confirmed this to be true. So wondering if they are just anti windows.
That said, does anyone know if there is technology that won't allow you to burn certain ISO software if downloaded from the net? Normally I buy all my software if I like it but am wondering what this BIT locker is and how it works.
I think windows has a hit on their hands.
Hoping for this new job - fingers crossed, prayers appreciated guys and gals.
Been through quite a lot and hoping the breakthrough is coming soon.

The OS is only one part of the Apple matrix. You have the hardware design, which looks better than most machines from HP, Dell, Acer, etc. You have the upscale shopping experience, which the average person prefers over Newegg, CostCo, or Best Buy. I'd pick an Apple Genius over Geek Squad any day when it can to tech support.
So will Windows 7 stymie Apple's growth? No, Apple will hurt their own growth with overpriced computers in a downturn economy. I don't think Win 7 will have any affect Positive or Negative. To people who don't know Windows 7, Windows 7 will look too much like Vista to be considered "fresh". People who used Vista and Win 7 however, will know just how much work has gone into Vista to fix its early problems and how 7 takes it to the next level.

I think also part of their recent success has stemmed from their complete domination of the portable music player (iPod) and the also-successful iPhone. People who own these devices might be thinking "Hey, this is actually pretty good" and then when it comes time to buy a new computer, Apple is now on their short list.
That said, Microsoft's dominance of the desktop market isn't going anywhere fast. Especially since Apple has always been anout the total experience from hardware to software. As Microsoft effectively has hundreds of manufacturer's installing their OS on prebuilt desktops, and Apple only has one (themselves), there's really no question there. Until Apple takes the PC model (which will never happen), they will never take over, and I don't think that's their intention.
All of that said, the release of Windows 7, I think, will only concrete Microsoft's position I made in point 2. In my opinion, coupled with an agressive marketing campaign (which has already started) to push this as "not Vista", this will stop Apple's current growth - but I'd hesitate to say it will decrease.

Apple is a toy. I've used it both th mac and mac pro. Their hardware is'nt worth a quarter of what they charge, and they improperly put it together to top it off.
The OS is the worse. There are more bugs then a amazon rainforest. Its total garbage. If Vista helped it, it shows how stupid the below average user really is and as far as I'm concerned 9% of market aint crap. With the release of Win7 Apple will be lucky to maintain 4% market after 6 months past final release.

I think this is a pretty good analysis. Apple designs nice hardware. Their systems cost too much for my taste and the closed nature of their environment keep me away, but their designs, both of hardware and software are well thought out. Say what you will of OSX, one thing it has is an attention to detail. It's not perfect, but compared to Windows, it is pretty close to perfect (in terms of attention to detail only. I got to spend a week fighting Final Cut Pro while editing a video at a friend's house. I could not believe how often the program was able to completely bring OSX down, and this is in a closed system environment. If you consider the infinite configurations Windows has to support, it's pretty obvious to me that the under-pinnings of OSX are not quite as well designed as the NT kernel).
I know a few folks who moved to Apple in the past year or two, and they are pretty happy with the decision (kinda have to be with what they paid), but still miss the little app they had for windows, that has no mac equivalent.
Apple needs to stay, to at least stimulate competition. I think XP, to some extent, and definitely Vista, have Apple to thank for some of the design and aesthetics. No, I don't buy the "Redmond, Start your copiers" line of thinking, but both companies rightfully see what works and implement them, and we the consumers benefit. That's good.
As far as picking Geek Squad over Genius Bar, that's like picking a turd sandwich over a douche bag (South Park Reference

As of December, Apple's Mac OS X commanded 9.63 percent of the OS market, according to Net Applications, while Microsoft still led the way, accounting for more than 88 percent of the operating-system market.
But the real story behind those figures is Apple's meteoric rise in the market. Just one year prior, in December 2007, Apple controlled just 7.3 percent of the operating-system space--a record at the time.
There are numerous reasons why Mac OS X has become so popular over the past few years. Part of it can be attributed to Apple's success and its status in the industry as the most renowned and respected company to consumers. It can also be attributed to Mac OS X itself, which is easily one of the best operating systems ever made.
And most assuredly, part of the reason for Mac OS X's success is Windows Vista. Although it currently controls 21 percent of the market, it was a failure on many levels for Microsoft. Suffice it to say that compatibility issues, User Account Control annoyances, vendor and enterprise unrest, and poor PR contributed to the blunder that was Vista.
But now, as a new Microsoft operating system starts making its way to store shelves, it's incumbent upon us to forecast its expected impact. And after downloading the Windows 7 beta and immersing myself in its environment, I think I can say, both as a Mac user (I'm writing this on my iMac) and what some may call an Apple nut (I own just about every Apple product released over the past five years), Windows 7 will not only stymie Mac OS X's growth, it will push Apple's market share back down to pre-Vista levels.
