Microsoft to begin automatic Internet Explorer upgrades in 2012

Quote:
Summary: In a major policy change, Microsoft plans to deliver IE upgrades automatically to Windows users. That moves IE incrementally closer to its fast-paced competitors, although there are still enough exceptions to keep enterprise users happy.

In January 2012, Microsoft will begin installing the latest version of Internet Explorer on Windows PCs automatically, via Windows Update.

Automatic browser updates will begin rolling out worldwide in Australia and Brazil and will gradually scale up to additional countries and continents over time.

Personally, I do not mind browsers autoupdating as long as they do not start having pop-ups prompting you to restart the browser. What do you guys think?
If there is no way to diable the updates I will probably stop using IE. I haven't upgraded to IE9 because I think it looks, feels and operates terrible, and I've been contemplating changing for a while. This might be the final nudge I need to change.

If Chrome Auotupdates, how about Firefox? Are there others that leave control in the users hands?

I personally diagree with forced updates of any kind, particularly for M$ products because of the problems that are all too common after updates. And when you manage multiple machines, it can be a pain.

It uses Windows Update, it will only be automatic if Windows Update is setup to be automatic. Otherwise, I doubt it will affect you at all. People are overreacting to something that won't even affect them. Those who dislike automatic updates already have Windows Update to not be automatic thus it won't affect you. And for business/IT departments they have their tools, again not something that deserves this overreaction.

I don't care how Google Chrome updates. I don't have it on my PC's.

It's about time, so that IE can compete head to head with FF and Chrome.

That sounds great! That means no more IE 7 on xp machines and a new and better IE 10 in 7.
