The PC World Challenge: 72 Hours of Windows 7!

Had Microsoft the gall, it would release Windows 7 as a free upgrade for Windows Vista users. It's not going to, nor can I see the software giant doing anything but slapping a standard pricing model on this "brand-new" OS. It'll be curious to see what this does to Vista support...

I was going to call out the irony of PC World complaining about Microsoft not allowing free upgrades, as the PC World near me charge extortionate prices, but then I saw it was the American PC World, so I let them off

I got Windows 7 installed last night, and I'm not having any problems with it. I'm quite happy with the beta really.

    The Spoiler

Microsoft doesn't know how to manage digital downloads. Nor does Microsoft know how to title its own applications--this isn't Windows 7, not by any means. It's Windows Vista SP2
I almost quit reading there... FOR GOD SAKE! WHEN WILL THEY EVER LEARN THAT Win7 =/= VISTA!!!!!

    EDIT

Installing Windows 7 (x64) brought a tear to my eye [...] [...] I'm also running a pretty souped-up PC--a stock-clocked Intel QX9650 running at 3.0GHz, four gigabytes of RAM, a speedy Western Digital terabyte hard drive, and an ATI Radeon HD 4850 video card.
4GB of RAM? get 8. x64 will run WAY faster than that.

    EDIT 2

I stopped reading at the beginning of page 2... that guy annoys me. A LOT.

One could make the same argument for every incremental OS X release, that the marginal improvements of any single feature might or might not be worthy of an upgrade. There might not be a killer app for everyone.

But the sum of the parts make for a better whole, and the user experience as a result of the sum of the parts make it worthwhile, and supporting/maintaining that user experience is easier since you don't have to manage lots of little third party apps to get a similar experience.

i just dont know where he gets that a Service pack would get UI changes new user features and such....

SP1 and SP2 (and now SP3) did not bring significant changes to the table like Windows 7 does....

damm most people dont even remember the Win Nt days.....

after all the Ranger 2009 is only an upgrade on a 2005, right?

and that chocolate milk I half drank, the dairy oughta give me a new one free cuz it's really the same thing only fresher, so why should I have to pay for it?

David Murphy is a freaking whiner. Obviously he's never used OS X with it's almost annual updates sold as a new OS. There are more changes between Vista and Seven then there are between Tiger and Leopard, or any of the .+1 versions of OS X. All Microsoft needs now are some cute commercials and everyone will love them.
