Windows 8 totally new tablet touch screen look

I tried it out a few weeks ago and I hated it. It would be fine on Tablets/Windows Phone but on a desktop PC? No.

But, since Windows 8 is about HUGE changes, I wonder if the lock screen a user chooses can become the boot screen background since honestly, most desktop users won't really lock their PCs unlike mobile users. If the lock screen with all the notifications, maybe, along with a boot animation, I think it'd look nice.

You mention that it is what a Software designer would like --but what about THE USERS.

I don't actually mind the metro UI --but would like to be able to customize the applications so it's more suitable as a desktop than having it look and feel like "Android Mk II".

i THINK THERE is LIFE IN w8 BUT please no more of those HORRIBLE tablets. I can just about stomach a smart phone but why on Earth would I choose a tablet over a nice small light Netbook where you can attach PROPER peripherals at will and run a desktop OS.

You might not chose a tablet over a netbook but it seems a lot of people do. I guess it all depends on what you want. I'd like to get my hands on an ASUS Transformer Prime, a tablet with touch screen when you want and an almost netbook with keyboard the rest of the time. I might even run Windows 8 on it. :)

That Asus "tablety thingy" you mention is ABSOLUTELY horrible -- it's not easy to either dock or undock the keyboard and it can't run any sensible OS yet. If you don't undock the keyboard it's really unstable when used as a screen with a keyboard. It'll tip over just by LOOKING at it.

At least an ASUS Aspire one proper netbook can plug in to a decent HDMI monitor, load up a proper workstation OS on it, run apps like Photoshop and MS office and can plug in a whole host of peripherals to say nothing of the fact that it's probably 100 - 150 EUR CHEAPER than the tablet !!!!, about the same size and certainly no heavier.

With 4GB RAM installed and a halfway decent processor installed its performance is actually quite respectable and certainly fit for purpose while travelling too provided you don't go bonkers with it.

Even better with an SSD drive installed.
I even run vmware workstation on this with a W2003 server as a virtual machine for some old legacy XP apps. Works perfectly acceptably for the apps I'm running.

I can't imagine sitting on say a Eurostar train and attempting to create a powerpoint presentation on one of those tablets -- and for surfing / email a decent Samsung smart phone works just fine.

Yet the Netbook works 100% fine.

Clearly for you its not an option, me I can live with the shortcomings. By the time I actually manage to but aside enough spare cash to purchase one things may well be different. Only time will tell. Obviously you wouldn't use one even if somebody gave it to you, if that should happen though I know where you could send it. :)
