I'm sure as usual there will be some kind of converter for years to come from VGA/DVI to HDMI or whatever is needed to be converted to in 5+ years time ....

Yeah i got a HDM-DVi adaptor for my old tv at Monoprice a while ago, found it to be pretty useful (though right now i Have my XBOX in that port, and it can;t do HDMI+composite sudio at the same time, so it's component.

What's strange for me is the fact that I just put together an Eyefinity setup with my current rig, and I had to use multiple DVI ports to accomplish this (along with a Mini DisplayPort adapter). Because I previously connected my single monitor with an HDMI cable, I kept thinking, "I'm not going backwards, am I?" But quite frankly, the image quality looks the same to me.
That is because they are basically the same, with the exception that HDMI adds audio and is a smaller connection. You will get the same video signal from both.

You are welcome Bertison. Wikipedia is a useful starting point for a lot of research.

Even if DVI is old, it's a digital signal, and that's the port most monitor manufacturers make anyway.

    Discard Perfectly Working Equip?

Yes they would, but that GPU would most likely be outdated as by that time the standards would have changed.
ALL standards are outdated by the time they show up in hardware. Having the "latest standards" hardware, is not a good reason to discard perfectly working equip. How often do you replace your Mobo/CPU? I wish I had a friend like you, so I could buy all his 6-month old computers @ 1/3 price!!!

The DVI spec can't keep up--It's too slow. It was good in it's time just like VGA replaced CGA. As already mentioned, HDMI includes audio and HS-HDMI is just around the corner. The High Speed HDMI is supposed to support larger and faster screens above the 1080p threshold as well as 3D in native mode. Some TVs were shown at CES-2012 that makes the current crop of the best HD-TVs look like the old VGA. They are near photo quality displays with no lag or motion smear. It will be like looking at live action through a window.

I just wonder how long it will be until broadcasting catches up.
