I'm sure as usual there will be some kind of converter for years to come from VGA/DVI to HDMI or whatever is needed to be converted to in 5+ years time ....

That is because they are basically the same, with the exception that HDMI adds audio and is a smaller connection. You will get the same video signal from both.

You are welcome Bertison. Wikipedia is a useful starting point for a lot of research.

Even if DVI is old, it's a digital signal, and that's the port most monitor manufacturers make anyway.

ALL standards are outdated by the time they show up in hardware. Having the "latest standards" hardware, is not a good reason to discard perfectly working equip. How often do you replace your Mobo/CPU? I wish I had a friend like you, so I could buy all his 6-month old computers @ 1/3 price!!!
