It makes a difference on how you connect. If you are hard wired by ethernet into a modem the connection is immediate while usb and dial-up type connections can be a problem especially when the vm is on an external device like a flash drive or usb hard drive.
Here I actually changed ISPs in order to run the 64bit Windows as well as seeing Linux connect online even on a vm! At first the new ISPs modem was another problem until replaced just getting online with that. Virtual Box has a few network options there with NAT seen as the default.
