they should just use the 98 logo

I can see their efforts towards a more "modern" logo, but they're not there yet.
Boobah's colored version of the logo actually looked pretty good, where did you find it, or did you make it?

yeah I used to have a wallpaper of a clear windows logo that looked really slick... let me see if I can find it real quick.

...well it's not the exact one I had in mind but I found one that was close.

it seems this is something a lot of people have worked with over the years.

Perhaps a competition to design the new logo is in order?

I still think a competition would be the best way to do this if they were in fact going to do it. Imagine the 1,000's of professional designers and amateurs too that would be submitting some really awesome ideas that we didn't even think of... nor did microsoft.

I'm sure there's a way to make the logo new without dropping what has made it so recognizable over the years.

Memories? They were more like nightmares for me when I tried to get it running in VM last month...couldn't get anything beyond FF 1.5 to run semi-smoothly, Flash was a nightmare...etc

In case you wanna take a shot: A pretty good place to start... this one too...

I agree. Even though the 98 logo is old, it actually looks pretty new. It could be a sort of retro look
