i think its because
windows 2000 was version 5.0
windows XP was version 5.1
windows vista was version 6.0
so windows 7 is 7 that is the number after 6, well really its only modified vista version thus real version 6.1 (look help>about windows) but its bad for marketing to have windows 6.1 so windows 7 sounds better | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Self Built PC OS Windows 7 pro 64bit. The devil will be in the details. I'm not currently planned to build or upgrade a W8 system for quite a while and unless the reports start coming back the W8 does amazingly better things in a desktop/full system set up it just appears to be a hybrid design to bring advance features to mobile environs. With this being the case the look of the logo neither enhances or detracts.....it's just there. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number A blend of brains, brawn and dumb luck, ask me about rig #2 ! Jim Take out ME or 2000. Quote: Mike Nash, Microsoft's vice-president of Windows product management said: The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore Windows 7 just makes sense. Coming up with an all-new 'aspirational' name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.[9][10] Numbering this version of Windows as "7" has confused many users, so on October 14, 2008, Nash clarified his earlier remarks, saying: [11][12] The very first release of Windows was Windows 1.0, the second was Windows 2.0, the third Windows 3.0. Here's where things get a little more complicated. Following Windows 3.0 was Windows NT which was code versioned as Windows 3.1. Then came Windows 95, which was code versioned as Windows 4.0. Then, Windows 98, 98 SE and Windows Millennium each shipped as 4.0.1998, 4.10.2222, and 4.90.3000, respectively. So we're counting all 9x versions as being 4.0. Windows 2000 code was 5.0 and then we shipped Windows XP as 5.1, even though it was a major release we didn't want to change code version numbers to maximize application compatibility. That brings us to Windows Vista, which is 6.0. So we see Windows 7 as our next logical significant release and 7th in the family of Windows releases...There's been some fodder about whether using 6.1 in the code is an indicator of the relevance of Windows 7. It is not. Windows 7 is a significant and evolutionary advancement of the client operating system. It is in every way a major effort in design, engineering and innovation. The only thing to read into the code versioning is that we are absolutely committed to making sure application compatibility is optimized for our customers.[12] | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built OS Windows 7 HP 64bit, Windows 8 Pro w/Media Center 64bit CPU Phenom II X6 1100T Motherboard ASUS M5A99X EVO Memory Crucial Balistic 8gb DDR3-1866 CL9 Graphics Card MSI R6850 Cyclone IGD5 PE Sound Card On Board Monitor(s) Displays ASUS VE258Q 25" LED with DVI-HDMI-DisplayPort Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 Keyboard Logitech K120 Mouse Logitech Marble Mouse USB, Logitech Precision Game Pad PSU Seasonic X650 80 Plus GOLD Modular Case Corsair 400R Cooling Antec Kuhler H2O 620, Two 120mm and four 140mm Hard Drives Two WD Cavier Black 2TB Sata III, WD My Book Essential 2TB USB 3.0 Internet Speed 15MB Antivirus Norton IS 2012, Malwarebytes Pro Browser IE-10, FF-19 Other Info APC UPS ES 750, Netgear WNR3500L Gigabit & Wireless N Router with SamKnows Test Program, Motorola SB6120 Gigabit Cable Modem.
