I don't guess there is too much reason to get excited, because if I understand, this is something that will integrate into an optical broadband connection, and I have not seen or heard of anything going in that direction here locally. I'm assuming that the ISP would have to offer fiber optical service, for it to be of any use.

I can see this not far off. Large companies like G.M. and government agencies like N.A.S.A. accessing and transferring data in house. Can you imagine time and energy saved just in back-ups. I.B.M. is another company R and D for the future.

I know that it may be narrow minded and biased, but I'm not nearly so interested in what benefits big companies, as I am what benefits me and those like me. Somehow, the idea of those in high places being able to transfer data as rapidly as that, make me feel more uncomfortable with where and how my data is stored. They could transfer everything on my machine in 3 or 4 seconds. Security is going to become a much greater issue than it is even now.

You are correct this new thing will not help people like me and you for many years to come. I'm sure I.B.M. didn't have Gaming and surfing the net in mind when they spent the money and time designing this.

I wonder if this, coupled with optical storage, will finally give us the processing power needed to run a simulation of the human brain?

No, there is a lot more to a human brain than data processing and storage.

Everything can be simulated if you have enough processing power.
