Windows 7 keeps growing in popularity over XP

Windows 7 increased its lead over XP in October.

As recorded by Web tracker Net Applications, Windows 7 scored a market share of 44.7 percent last month, a slight gain from September's 44 percent. Over the same time, XP's share fell from 41.2 percent to 40.7 percent.

Though the gap between September and October is hardly earth-shaking, the numbers show that Windows 7 is slowly grabbing more users from the now 11-year-old XP. After years of XP holding the dominant position, Windows 7 finally won the top OS spot in August, according to Net Applications.

It was inevitable. XP is dying in 17 months and Win8 is meeting the same reception that Vista did.

Office 2013 is a horrible program, it very slow at loading files and booting up, and UI has really big buttons typically designed for tablets and phones; Windows 8 is a modernised Vista with a fancy Metro UI.

How about this, would it work?
1 XP server and domain with 100 XP work stations. All with the programs that have been working and doing the job they have been doing for years. No Internet connection. 1 Windows 7 computer for Internet use that is Networked to the XP server. After the XP cut off the XP domain could still work as it has always done. My understanding is that workstation don't need Internet access to do their/there job. After reading many reports on Windows 8 and the new Windows Office; why would anybody go down that road? It's obvious I know little about servers and domains. If this happens would XP in a domain like this be counted in the total tally? 1 Server and 100 Workstations. Its just a idea of mine. With 90% plus of market share Windows only competition is Windows.

While very remote, I'm guessing there is a chance the XP system could be infected through the Win7 computer (I doubt Win7 AVs will be looking for XP specific nasties). The only absolutely safe way an XP system will be able to operate after support ends is to have no internet connection; period. I suspect there will be a significant uptick in XP nasties after support ends.

And then you've got flash drives and other removable media to worry about. There are ways to protect against those threats, but I'm not sure how effective they actually are.

XP was a flop in itself when it was first out 11yrs. ago being rushed out to follow the ME flop only in the next year's time frame. At first the same hardware limitations seen in Windows 200 were to be found in XP until SP1 broke the 137gb barrier and finally SP3 now that 7 was almost out at the time fixed over 1,000 goobers! In all that time MS never fixed half the bugs the old version saw until two versions later!

There is a chance that it won't either! Removable media and flash drives, flash cards for card readers, etc. would be more of a risk for a closed network that doesn't have any outside internet access.

On a 7 system over XP 7 would start off by being the more secure OS as well as likely seeing updated protections added on like the newer version of an av program or better firewall. Malicious code detection was also to see another slight layer of protection built into the newer version to some extent as well as having the Windows Defender for whatever good that is.

With either version on a closed network however any bugs would have to be brought into it by way of the removal and simply downloaded directly if not placed by trojan dropper some site stuffs on.

What will really make 7 stand out besides security improvements is the vastly improved crash control first seen in Vista over the desktop being locked solid on an XP machine which would also tend to see far more BSODs! "Crash Central" was the gamer's nightmare with XP no doubt!

With 8 now seen with the Surface Tablet's Windows RT gui in use 7 will now even outgrow any other version period in popularity simply from being the last version to see the traditional Start menu! You have to weigh that into the equation as well.
