Gmail finally overtakes Hotmail as world's top email service Quote: Internet analytics firm comScore is putting an end to any disputes about Gmail's dominance in the webmail market -- in case you were keeping scores. According to their traffic data for October, Google’s email service has finally overtaken Hotmail with 287.9 million unique worldwide visitors during the month versus 286.2 million for Hotmail. Look back 5 years, and Hotmail would have been dominated the Mail service market completely, mostly because they were the days when everyone used to use MSN to speak to each other
I use Hotmail personally, I have a GMail account for YouTube, so I'm guessing the GMail numbers have increased so rapidly as they mention you have to create a GMail account in order to create a YouTube account, but I'm pretty sure that other Mail service providers also worked with creating a YouTube account | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavilion dm1 Notebook PC OS Windows 7 Home Premium x86 Service Pack 1 - Linux Mint Mate 14 x64 CPU AMD E-450 APU (64-Bit) @ 1.65GHz Dual-Core Motherboard HP 3387 36.0A (Socket FT1) Memory 4GB DDR3 @ 676MHz Graphics Card AMD Radeon HD 6320 Graphics Sound Card Beats Audio - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC Monitor(s) Displays LCD HP Monitor Screen Resolution 1366 x 768 @ 60Hz Keyboard Standard PS/2 Keyboard Mouse Synaptics TouchPad V 7.5/Logitech USB Wireless PSU Microsoft Composite Battery - ACPI Case HP Cooling HP Cool Sense Hard Drives 500GB - SATA Hitachi HTS547550A9E384 Internet Speed 24.0 Mbps Antivirus Microsoft Security Essentials Browser Opera 12.15; Firefox 21 Other Info NIC - Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter

I personally have a gmail account but I use it sparingly since I think it's the worst email client I've ever used. It's mostly used in conjunction with my Google Play account, otherwise I don't use it to send/receive mail. I use Windows Live Mail and like it much better.
In order to have a Google Play account (app store for Android devices), you need to have a gmail account. I think a large portion of gmail's gain is because of that requirement. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built, Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop OS Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit), Win 7 Pro (32-bit) CPU 3.4Ghz 3770K i7, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo Motherboard Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, Dell Memory 8G, 3G Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5770, Mobile Intel 965 Sound Card High Definition Audio (Built-in to mobo) Monitor(s) Displays Dell 2409W 24" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard IBM Model M - used continuously since 1986 Mouse Microsoft PSU Antec Case Antec 100 Cooling CM 212+ Hard Drives 128G SSD OS; 1.5T & 2T Data on Desktop, 320G for laptop Internet Speed 1.5M down 1.2M up :-( Other Info Also have an Acer Aspire netbook, a home-built AMD Dual core (Minecraft server) and home-built Pent 4 all running Win 7. If you need an upto date mail server you can't beat Gmail. Hotmail updates every 15 mins so not as good as Gmail. It speaks for itself which to use! | My System Specs

I hate gmail. Partly because it belongs to Google but mostly because its performance doesn't even come up to sucking on a good day.
My ISP outsourced its email server to Google and has a gmail proxy behind it. At least three times out of four, it takes minutes for my email client to find no mail or even send email on the gmail account.
Just this morning, I made a permanent redirection to another of my email accounts and turned off automatic lookup on the gmail based account. I have a possible 250 email accounts that I get for $5/month along with 2Gig of asp/aspx web space where I control the server settings. Email accounts on that server take a fraction of a second to do something where gmail can take minutes. The interesting thing is that it is so close to being free, I don't notice the difference in cost. However, I do notice the difference in the time it takes for nothing to happen.
Free is almost never cheap. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Gmail finally overtakes Hotmail as world's top email service problems? All times are GMT -5. The time now is 04:59 PM.
