"According to Fujifilm, the procedure can bring about a recording density of 25 Gbytes per layer, the equivalent to the recording density of a Blu-ray Disc (BD), in addition to 20 layers per side of a disc. A double-sided optical disc with a 1TB storage capacity is possible. Fujifilm foresees bringing a 1TB optical disc to market in 2015.

Will this cut into external HDD's by any significant percentage I wonder?
Given that optical disks are read-only by design while HDDs can be written to an infinite number of times, I would assume that won't be the case. The two mediums simply perform different roles that don't really overlap.
BDs are already pretty large, running at 25GB even for a single layer disk, and we haven't seen those push out HDDs and SSDs have we?
Pretty much my thoughts too, but then most of my storage is permanent (movies, old files etc.) Since my work keeps me on the road approximately 8/10 months a year I have to have a "traveling office/file cabinet" for everything I could even remotely possibly need :)) Really bites to have to drive 400 miles for a piece of paper/information/permit from 3 years back that I forgot. I go through a LOT of external HDD's because of the wear and tear.
Also forgot to mention that consumer-grade optical disks we buy to burn stuff on are made with ink that usually degrades over time. Given that HDDs and SSDs (especially SSDs!) are extremely resilient to the effects of time and wear, that's another factor keeping HDDs and SSDs relevant for long-term storage.
Same here, except I work with video and lugging around 3 or 4 3.5 inch drives was getting ridiculous. I'm getting a RAID box off Amazon for $200 that will take 4 drives in a nice tidy portable unit. 9GB of protected data will have to do!
2015 will be interesting. I doubt the greedy carriers will be ready to deliver blazing speed and enough affordable data rates so there will definitely be a market for large physical storage...I dropped optical discs a long time ago, but if the price was right, this has potential...likely they're after a different market though.
