Well I bought myself an early x-mas present, a new Asus laptop to replace the aging d-820.
Why now? Well it has an i5, 8 gigs ram, 500 gig drive, usb 3.0, and the #1 reason .. drum roll please ..
it did Not have Windows 8.
Windows 7 Start Menu for Windows 8 +
8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 8 = Win7 without Aero.
It grafts Win7 explorer parts that contain the Start menu onto Win8 seamlessly. It performs exactly like Win7 Start menu because it is. At the same time it toggles off Metro so it isn't even loaded into RAM. You can switch back and forth via Log In. The link is in my previous post.
Missed it Greg.
So are you saying that with W8 which now is supplied with most OEM PCs it is easy to get the W7 capabilities including look and feel?
Just checked out your link Greg and that is indeed the program I use and it works like a charm. I have access to all the features of Windows 8 Pro in a Windows 7 type environment. I also installed MS games from my Windows 7 DVD as well, because I like to play Spider Solitaire, Solitaire and Hearts occasionally.
It loads the identical Win7 Start Menu but still maintains 8 improvements in the Explorer windows, graph during copying functions, etc.
Because it doesn't load Metro into RAM it seems to gain back a little speed but to me it is not enough to use it instead of Win7. In fact the first time I visited my 8 partition in weeks is to verify this info for you.
Edit: Oh, great. I know I'm still in Win8 when I click on a screenshot here to read it and it opens to the size of a postage stamp.

Interesting, because I have clicked on numerous screenshots and never had one open to the size of postage stamp.Edit: Oh, great. I know I'm still in Win8 when I click on a screenshot here to read it and it opens to the size of a postage stamp using one of the crApps.
