Windows Defender is Windows 8 version of Microsoft Security Essentials, since Windows 8 doesn't support MSE for some reason

That's because Windows Defender in Windows 8 is MSE in a nutshell, it just has a different name. ┐( ̄ー ̄)┌

Don't you have to use a third-party program in order to achieve that configuration?
Yes. It is a tiny program that imports the Windows 7 start menu from a Windows 7 installation DVD. After that, its only function is to allow you to switch between the 7 and 8 desktops. With the added built in security of Windows Defender there is no need to install a third party AV unless you want to. Also, the upgrade is for Windows 8 Pro, so I now have access to some features than my Windows 7 Home Edition doesn't. So for me it is worth it. Right now, 8 works and pretty much looks the same as 7 and I haven't had a single issue with it. I still have another copy of Windows 7 installed on another SSD in my PC to fall back on if I do start having problems with 8.
That's Interesting. I haven't tried W8 but are you are saying that a W7 installation disk will allow you to switch between W7 and W8 desktop (inc start orb etc)?
    Are there any licensing issues?

If this is all true then surley there should be a simple configuration switch in W8???

It grafts Win7 explorer parts that contain the Start menu onto Win8 seamlessly. It performs exactly like Win7 Start menu because it is. At the same time it toggles off Metro so it isn't even loaded into RAM. You can switch back and forth via Log In. The link is in my previous post.

    Missed it Greg.
So are you saying that with W8 which now is supplied with most OEM PCs it is easy to get the W7 capabilities including look and feel?

Just checked out your link Greg and that is indeed the program I use and it works like a charm. I have access to all the features of Windows 8 Pro in a Windows 7 type environment. I also installed MS games from my Windows 7 DVD as well, because I like to play Spider Solitaire, Solitaire and Hearts occasionally.

It loads the identical Win7 Start Menu but still maintains 8 improvements in the Explorer windows, graph during copying functions, etc.

Because it doesn't load Metro into RAM it seems to gain back a little speed but to me it is not enough to use it instead of Win7. In fact the first time I visited my 8 partition in weeks is to verify this info for you.

Edit: Oh, great. I know I'm still in Win8 when I click on a screenshot here to read it and it opens to the size of a postage stamp.

Interesting, because I have clicked on numerous screenshots and never had one open to the size of postage stamp.
