USB 3.0x2 sounds great. With my luck I'll get to experience crashes, BSODs, etc twice as fast.
On a serious note, it would be even nicer if ISPs would work on increasing upload/download speeds. Maybe then it would make sense to store multi-gigabyte files in the cloud and not have to wait weeks or months for the transfer to take place.

So... Will this USB 3.1 require new hardware or just an update to Windows?
It'd suck if I'll need a new laptop.

USB 3.0 cables may or may not work. "Existing SuperSpeed USB cables are not certified to operate at 10 Gbps; it is possible that some existing SuperSpeed USB cables may be capable of operating at 10 Gbps," the group said.

We already have Thunderbolt ports for PCs, SATA Express is coming, and now USB 3.0x2.
Let's do some calculation... Here's my current USB 3.0 flashdrive's CrystalDisk Benchmark:
x2 this benchmark and still won't be as good as a decent SATA III SSD's performance, much less getting close to Thunderbolt and SATA Express transfer rates...

Honestly I don't see it as a killer feature, which is actually nice. I don't have the need to upgrade my system just for this, but it will be a nice perk for when I do upgrade.

Let's hope it will be really faster. Today's USB3 at 5Gb is actually slower than eSata at 3Gb. Go figure.

The move will uncork speed bottlenecks of external SSD storage devices, open up options such second monitors, and help confine the even faster Thunderbolt interface to a high-end niche.
But it won't happen immediately. The specification should be done in mid-2013, which "will enable initial products to appear in late 2014 with a much broader availability of products in 2015," according to the USB 3.0 Promoter Group, which announced the faster Universal Serial Bus work today at the CES show.
