Of course on a Windows 7 Forum why should people have any liking whatsoever for W8 I hope you were being ironic.
That is exactly what MS should be doing. They should leverage their dominance in the desktop arena, and their enormous asset - the 1.3bn user base they already have.
In a sense they are doing just that. But they are trying to do it by force and a process of attrition - just wearing down the resistance.
Very peculiar way to go about it.
I have been watching the wacky world of W8 unfold with a mixture of astonishment and hilarity.
They have thrown away the book. It is hard to think of a single thing they have done right.
They might still get away with it. They might be able to get what they want by force and stealth.
They can afford to patch and stitch things together afterwards.
They can forcefully leverage the user base - there is no competition in the desktop arena - those who need to buy some sort of laptop will have to buy something with w8 on it. ( The very few who can spend at least $1400 UK prices might be able get a macbook ). Everybody else gets windows. Period. That is estimated to be over 300m every 12mths.

I have no idea who is calling the shots at Microsoft but they have less brain cell than I do. I only got 3. You do not have to throw the baby out with the bath water. I understand the new market they want a major share of it. You don't have to treat Windows 7 owners like something the cat drug in. There is over a billion of us that could and many would update to windows 8 if there were reasonable option included in the Windows 8 system. I do not want to have to run around the world on the net looking for 3rd party programs to add to Windows 8 for it to be useable to most desktop owners and many laptop owners too. Their should be options built in Windows 8 for the choosing. I get tired of hearing that people are just old and set in their ways and don't want to change. I'm up in my years and have through the years stepped up to new operating system with no problems after a learning curve that really don't take that long things went well. I don't want a new operating system just because it is new. I want it because it is new and better. Maybe a Windows 7-SE edition like 98-SE. If enough changes to better Windows 7 were in the SE edition I would pay for a SE download. Everybody knows that want to know Microsoft owns the operating system market. They are basically competing against their self. Windows 7 against Windows 8; WHY. They can have both markets. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home made Desktop OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. So who does M$ have to compete against?
If you don't like Win8, big deal!! It won't bother M$... why should it? You'll just get Windows 7..
Meanwhile M$ will push Win8 to their other possible market.. new users/Tablet/Smartphones and to annoy Apple.
M$ is a monopoly....
They can do what they like, they still have Windows 7 for the desktop user.
Win8 will push for another market similar to Apple, Think of it... M$ with it's user database and M$ version of Apple's store and locked down products..
Just something to think about. | My System Specs

Easy Iforgot. Lets play well together. As I posted; when it comes to desktop and quality lap tops Microsoft has no competition. Also as I posted they want a big bite of the other markets. Toys, phone, tablets, ect.
I think 99% of us know that. It is getting very hard to buy a desktop or quality laptop with Windows 7 installed. I don't think it should be that way. Like I have posted many times before Microsoft wants a big bite out of Apples apple. When I don't buy Windows 8 it is no big deal. When a billion disktop owners don't buy Windows 8 it is a big deal.

Sorry
That wasn't specifically directed at you, not a well organized post.
I do agree with what you're saying and "just something to think about" was a generalization meant for all people. | My System Specs

It looks like its going to be the same now with 7.
I like it, in fact I'm using it now, I have a group of tiles that relate to my most used forums and just a click takes me straight in already logged in ready to go.
OK still finding things out but there are lots of things quicker than 7 and I like how quick it boots. You're never going to get everyone to agree about it, but that would be boring if they did. Just use what makes you happy and what works for you. Very well stated Joan, I agree completely, use what you like.
For any reason someone doesn't like it, which is an individual choice, it's good enough. Repeatedly bashing it just makes them look ... antagonistic.
Let's let everyone make their own choice.

I have tried Windows 8 and downgraded back to Windows 7 because of the Metro Start Screen, it's really confusing finding the files that you need. And it's also annoying because Windows 8 is not much for desktop computers, it's only for laptops and smart phones. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number RoasterMen's Systemator OS Windows 7 Ultimate x86 SP1 (Upgrade from Windows Vista Home Basic) CPU Intel (R) Core(TM) i3 2120 3M Cache @3.30GHz Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-H67M-D2-B3 LGA 1155 Intel H67 SATA 6Gb/s Memory Corsair XM3 Dual-Channel 2x4 4GB Graphics Card ATi Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5 Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Samsung S24A350H Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard A4 Tech Anti-RSI Mouse Logitech G5 PSU OCZ ModXStream-Pro 700W Case Trendsonic Gleam Cooling ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm Fluid Dynamic CPU Co Hard Drives Western Digital WD Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache Internet Speed 2 mb/s (pretty unfair) Other Info Integrated Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 |

Thing is Dave, it is not really about how usable metro is or not. It's not about a learning curve.
It is about what w8 is for and the effect it may have.
W8 is trying to lead people online for everything.
That is why they keep shoving the start screen at you and exhorting you to get an MS account.
The aim is to get people into a subscription based service - with control of all you can run being handled by MS. There are all kinds of unpleasant results , cost, control, privacy for example.
They don't put that in the commercials - the user is not supposed to notice. They are supposed to get sucked in gradually.
It might be good for MS . It is very bad for everyone else.
