If the happy win 8 users are wondering - the software you install and d/l is beimg monitored in some way by MarkMonitor BrandProtection/AntiPiracy.

If you are wondering what they are for - this is one of the things they do:

Quote:
... a service called MarkMonitor for identifying alleged infringement over peer-to-peer networks. This service uses both trained professionals and automated processes to identify illegal downloading of whole movies, TV shows and musical recordings.
I hope none of us advocate piracy - but are we comfortable being spied on - this extra whatever it is - comes with win 8 , it appears.

What else is going on - what else is that kind of info going to be used for, etc .

Was that in the commercials ? I don't think so.

No thanks.

So this is the real inteded purpose to stop the downloads and all the ftp and peer to peer sites honestly i havn't used a peer to peer for some times but that is just plain goofy the internet has alot to offer illegal or not but the user should decide ultimatly

We already take risk as it is with betas and other software that isn't WHQL certified to use to learn etc
They are pretty much taking away the technical scheme for people who know how programing works and those who can write software to change or re-edit it i understand this is to protect there investments but that wasn't the reason why windows was created it was to give the user total control now that it isn't what it was when it was introduced in the mid 80's they have gone off the road of personal freedom usage to a Mass of unknowing sheep that just goes where the shepherder leads them

I don't know what MS is intending to use that brand protection service for - however, that is one of things MarkMonitor do.

We do know MS have control over the app. store - they dictate what you can get from there.

We also know they have a patented spying method here, to name just one:

Microsoft patent spies on consumers to enforce DRM | ZDNet

From the patent summary :

Quote:
A content presentation system and method allowing content providers to regulate the presentation of content on a per-user-view basis...

The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken."
So they are spying on how many people are actually able to see the content - in your living room.

If MS have any sense, they won't police that themselves - they may license it out - to avoid accusations of spying or even bullying. It amounts to the same thing as they are supplying it.

If win 8 gets a foothold - and the average user just unknowingly goes along with what it is leading them to do - all this is going to get gradually worse.

The UI is distracting from the real issues , sadly.

MS wants everyone to store the os online - you will have to pay some sort of subscription for that - MS have also patented various subscription charging methods btw. It not just the bad idea of renting office and other programs.

There will be all sorts of issues of privacy and control as well as cost.

well it is like that with google just MS is putting there own type of spin scheme into place we all get that this is the target market but really this will give opportunity the those OS like Linux Redhat/dragonfly bsd (per example) a boost they are in fact just like windows with out all the security issues

So i mean if 7 ever runs out of updates or no longer operation for users and there is no similar os available i guess i can jump ship and roll that way it will just kill the loyal fan base they had for decades but who cares about that right ?

It appears Microsoft really likes to keep its head in the ground and doesn"t want to be confused by customer feedback:

Quote:
Microsoft exec: No 'Plan B' despite mobile stumbles

Then how about Plan A version 2.0, Mr. CFO?

Should Microsoft's tablet and phone efforts continue to inspire little interest among the buying public, don't expect a radical shift in strategy according to one senior Redmond exec, the company has no "Plan B".

...We'd rather not tell the man how to do his job, but we would be remiss if we didn't point out that Plan A does not appear to be taking the world by storm.

Do you have any further reading materials elaborating on this? I hate the level of user restriction and vendor control that Windows Store allows to Microsoft, but I was not aware MS had stooped down to actively monitoring my network communications secretly.
