Microsoft: Is this Steve Ballmer's last throw of the dice?

...Its last great bet was on Windows 8, a radical reinvention of its iconic operating system, designed to allow people to flip easily between tablets and PCs.

It was a disaster, both in the timing and the execution. Microsoft had started courting a tablet audience too late, and simultaneously alienated its longstanding customers who were still wedded to the old Windows style.

...But the question that is still plaguing many analysts was why has Microsoft not done more, and why is Mr Ballmer still in place after its catalogue of recent failures. He famously has Mr Gates’ backing, not to mention a huge tranche of Microsoft shares, But even so, it is hard to think of other technology chiefs that would have ridden out the disasters he has.

“I can’t see any other company in the industry where a chief executive would have been given as much time and as many new chances,” says a source. “He hasn’t made the mobile phone work. He hasn’t made Windows 8 work as well as it was supposed to.”

It might be a surprise that he has remained in position this far, but one thing seems clear: while this is unlikely to be Microsoft’s last rodeo, it is Mr Ballmer’s last big roll of the dice.

I think his last dice roll came up snake eyes.

You wouldn't want the 8 or 8.1 version of WMP to start with! They removed all the codecs and dvd/vcd playback capabilities in favor of forcing people to go out any buy separate players to begin with! VLC is about the closest to WMP and is a freebie you can grab for either however.
Haven't tried them myself yet (I have both Win 8 Media Center as and Media Player), but have you looked to Sharky’s codec package? I know they worked on Win 7

Anyway having 8 on my laptop, I'm getting quite use to it considering I use my laptop nearly as much as my main Win 7 desktop machine. And, no, my laptop is not touch.
The package installer for that removes existing codecs in favor of the combination that comes with. The problem with WMP 13 or whatnot you want to call it for 8, 8.1 is the lack of both video and dvd/vcd playback capabilities requiring that you go out and look.

MS figured there are so many players out therre why bother to keep on putting any in anymore. And replacing codecs still wouldn't replace the dvd/vcd functions they removed. Just another headache for running a vastly "stripped down" OS! Suited for tablet where you wouldn't run them there anyway. Just forget all about the desktop users would be the main critism for that.

Yep I eventually found it under the Windows Features window and it was ticked so I guess what started of with me just about to blow a gasket and dump 8 I now have the WNP a it was with my music still attached.

All the same the OS is nice and speedy - my boot time is just 12 secs to start screen and that is wit SanDisk SSD which was not that quick with 7 but overall so so convoluted which is making accepting it so hard.
Strip down any version of Windows to practically the bare bones and you will see it start up faster. The WaitToKillServices value in the registry was also lowered from 12000 seen in Vista/7 down to 5000. Some here run 7 with that much, much lower some only 400-500. To prevent unclosed program errors however a good 1000-1200 generally works for that.

So is that few seconds faster worth losing half of what is and has been seeminly always included in Windows par Legacy Days obviously until present really worth it? Not here. I can find an endless list of Linux distros that will reach the UNIX desktop in even less time then 8, 8.1! What is "under the hood" are the things about 7 that made it a champ over seeing MS come out after that with some contortion of tablet reality that no longer meets up with the desktop.

Convolution is about the "all so nice" touch&swipe you get with your new Surface tablet or one running 8 not about your average desktop to begin with. One thing I suspect as to why 7 was finally an OS Made Good is that MS already knew they would trashing the OS for the next few versions to go off on a venture in tablet land foresaking the desktop platform entirely! That will allow stubborn businesses time to finally get their act together and dump XP which will be dead issue in so many months now anyways and move up to 7(which would be obvious to see) or 8.

Hmmm, makes me wonder how some people define "enthusiast?" I mean, if they reject W8 can they really be thought of as enthusiastic?

Yes, they are enthusiastic about computers and a OS made for desktops not smartphones.

I'm glad you cleared that up. I wouldn't want Windows to Puninstall if nobody explained the joke. :)
If this is enthusiasm I'd hate to see disgruntled.

Actually if you're a true PC enthusiast you should at least give Win 8 a go. This way you can truly say what you like and dislike about it.

I've read posts here and elsewhere of so called enthusiasts stating they've never tried it; that reading the negative reviews or hearing from others on how bad it is was good enough for them.

Other classics... my friend tried it and didn't like it, or the "I tried it at my local (insert) store and didn't like it"

That hardly seems credible to me, but....

That is a very valid point. However, I have it but have never installed it -why? because it was going cheap and I may need it in the future. I do think it is valid to listen to the criticism of others less lazy than me who have tried it and find it lacking for desktop users. It strikes me that for even bog standard office use it appears lacking. Given I have W7 installed on 3 PCs and 2 spare copies I'll leave W8 in the box for the time being.

I've installed it nearly a dozen times and never spent more time with it than it took to make it a tolerable desktop experience: adding Windows 7 Start Menu for Windows 8 which toggles off Metro and grafts on a replica 7 Start Menu, uninstalling the crApps to default to WMP, decent Reader, etc. Then I finish it off by adding 8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 8 . By then it was an inferior knock-off of Win7 so why stick around?

Never found the slideshow previously so I couldn't set up the most popular feature on my installs which is the spectacular Win7 all-National-Editions backgrounds slideshow with 120 Original Windows 7 High Resolution Scenery Regional Wallpapers Free Download. But just now I adapted my sister's Toshiba 8 preinstall and it strangely had the slide show function. It' isn't Blue, maybe it's the first useful Toshiba add-on?

With 3 computers running Win7 I'm sure you can find the space to setup VMware ® Player and give 8 a try. That's what I did before getting my laptop which also came with 8.

With VMware I'm running 8.1, while just running 8 on the laptop. This allows me the check out the OS and see the differences between the two.

BTW performance wise 8 is just as good if not better than 7. And I'm running 8 straight out of the box. No add-ins.

    My two cents.
