Has anyone verified Libreoffice works without Java ?
Is it worth while to dump OO for it ?
The machine I put it on is java free. I just installed libre office 4 and it did not ask to install java
It's really very funny to see people become paranoid on Java. If it's required, just install it!
Most things do work without it, but a few require it, notably Base.
System Requirements » LibreOffice
robinb9, thank's for the quick reply.
Alejandro85, "If it's required, just install it!" never again.
I guess you have not kept up with the problems it's had lately.
But I think some of the extensions need java so if you really need the extension you might have no choice. I do not need them. So I will not install the java
I've read the whole forum I assure you, I know what I'm saying.
I guess you've not seen that the security problem is only within the web browser plugin, not the whole Java runtime environment, and LibreOffice doesn't make use of the web plugin.............
Besides, when counting Antivirus, UAC, some backup and most important common sense, you can enjoy Java without any major problems without sacrificing functionality.
Btw I noticed on all the business computers I help clients purchase through my dell account. Non of them have java installed. I started noticing this about 3 mths ago. All are running windows 7 pro or windows 8 pro,,,,very interesting because before the last security problem in java. All of new computers had java installed
Java can be disabled for browsers if not needed, and the only feature of LibreOffice which requires Java is Base.
I'm not sure to be honest, I don't use Base, someone will have try it without Java installed/enabled for desktop programs, and then report back any compatibility issues
