Hello Gary,
There's not going to be a SP2 for Windows 7. Instead, MS has issued a rollup to help combine the updates instead. It'll only be available if you don't already have all the updates installed.

As announced yesterday on the Microsoft "Blogging Windows" blog, Microsoft plans to begin rolling out Windows 7 SP1 automatically, via Windows Update to Windows 7 users who still are running the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) version without SP1 installed. This process will begin on March 19.

Just had a thought. Could this be a way of spotting Non Genuine Windows 7 systems also. Which I think is a great idea.

Mines been on my machine since day 1 of its release. I really see no reason NOT to have it myself. But I'm admittedly a "kook" about keeping my O.S. up to date. I do understand others trepidation about updates though. Xp's first service pack comes to mind, had a lot of trouble with that one.

I've seen instances where a SP breaks something and then that user avoids it like the plague. Often that user will tell who ever will listen to avoid it at all costs as it will break their system.
They are going to get the equivalent of the SP anyway, it will just be many single patches instead.
There are also the cheaters who fear getting caught and won't update their system. IMHO they are bad news for use all. Their system is more than likely compromised one way or the other.
For Microsoft dealing with one SP instead of countless single updates makes things easier. My Windows 7 install media has SP 1 integrated into it so its no big deal for me. Its one less big download and install. It would be nice if there was a SP 2 though. I may hunt up that roll up and save it the thumb drive I have the other Windows 7 updates on. I try to install as much as possible locally instead of though Windows update. Stuff like Internet Explorer, DirectX, Silverlight, Dot Net Framework, etc.

I'm not sure why having SP1 or not would distinguish between Genuine and non Genuine windows -- you don't HAVE to update (although it's recommended that you do of course) - and if you run say Win 7 as a virtual machine just to run maybe legacy software that doesn't work on W8 you probably never need to update.
I've got a few XP VM machines that haven't been updated for ages and even a Windows 98 and a Windows 2000 VM. These last two are genuine but obviously haven't been updated for many years. !!
Sometimes as well as a previous poster ahs said sometimes after installing a service pack some programs can fail so in every case it might not always be possible to add SP1

Windows 7 SP1 to start rolling out on Windows Update

Starting tomorrow, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will begin rolling out automatically on Windows Update. Updating customers to Windows 7 SP1 is part of our ongoing effort to ensure continued support and improved security updates for customers who have not yet installed SP1. Windows 7 SP1 was previously available on Windows Update but required user action to install. Starting tomorrow, the installation will be fully automatic with no user action required for those who already have Automatic Update enabled. SP1 will be released gradually over the coming weeks to all customers on the RTM version of Windows 7. The service pack will take slightly longer to install compared to other updates. To ensure Service Pack 1 is installed without issue, customers should check for sufficient free disk space and that AC power is present on a laptop. If additional space needs to be created, we recommend using the Disk Cleanup tool to delete some files so that the service pack will install. If the service pack installation is interrupted, it will reattempt to install automatically after the next restart.
This update only applies to Windows 7 consumer PCs that are not managed by a Microsoft management tool such as Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) or WSUS Server. SCCM and WSUS administrators still have full control over the release of Service Pack 1. This remains unchanged.
As mentioned by Stephen Rose here on the Springboard Series Blog - Windows 7 RTM (with no service pack) will no longer be supported as of April 9th, 2013.
