It's just frustrating. Under the hood they have such a brilliant OS. Really clean, really fast, a lot of improvements and noticeable differences over Win 7, yet the GUI just ruins all of that. I've had to resort to third party programs to get the experience I want, when all MS had to do was listen and see that the people want the kind of functionality those third party programs give, and they'd have a winner again.

Not to hijack this thread, but do you mind sharing what third party solutions you are using?

True, I agree about the speed and reliability has improved. (Of course, the main reason the speed has improved is the operating system never truly shuts down, or fully restarts.)
But they have also removed several features and replaced them with limited or non existent ones.

Perfect example, shadow copies are gone in windows 8, replaced by "file history". File history is a joke and a step backwards compared to windows 7's backup abilities. In windows 7 you could easily restore a accidental deleted file from previous versions (shadow copies) from several days or weeks or months ago. Without a backup! *Of course you should always have a backup, but just saying.* File history requires a external drive to be connected at almost all times and only backs up to external locations.

The other thing is file explorer is so frustrating to use. I like some of the aspects, like one click to view hidden file and folders without a menu, but the way it works is just ick.

Those are my biggest complaints, beside the obvious "start" menu that sucks.

I've bought Start8 and ModernMix from Stardock. Start8 adds in a fully functional classic Start menu, and all the Windows 8 stuff can be hidden completely. And ModernMix lets you run the Windows 8 apps in Windows Explorer windows instead of full screen. Makes using Windows 8 so much more enjoyable.

I wasn't just meaning the boot up speed, but even if I did a full shutdown of Windows 8 with "shutdown -s" in command prompt, the startup time is still a lot quicker than Windows 7. Memory management and prioritisation is very much improved in Windows 8. I don't get the "slow down" that Windows 7 used to have, when everything is up and running and it's been in use for a few months it just seemed to slow down and lose it's snappiness, whereas Win 8 just keeps on going.

The removal of VSS in Windows 8, is slightly annoying, but I think File History is still a step forward. Once the initial setup of it is done, be it on an external, internal secondary, or even an internal primary hard drive, then it's much nicer to use than the "Previous Version" stuff, in that little cramped explorer Window.

    Honestly, i don't feel 8.1 any faster than 7.
If anything, 7 is a bit quicker on boot/shutdown on my i7/16GB RAM/SSD setup.
Love the new task manager and file copying graph interface but that's about it.
Everything else screams that it's a stripped down version for tablets
Full screen start, details pane on the right side instead of bottom, a step backward in terms of eye candy, removing separate groups for hard drives and other devices in "my computer (this pc)" , some basic settings hidden deep into metro interface ......
    Seriously microsoft?

8/8.1 isn't noticeably any faster than 7 was on my desktop PC. I have hibernation disabled so boot times are about the same too. After using 8.1 for a while now the Metro start menu isn't an issue for me. Haven't felt the need for a third party program to revive the old start menu either. I use a track ball though instead of a mouse. I find it gives me quicker easier navigation than a mouse would. I very well may have a different option of 8.1 if I was moussing it.

Agree with this sentiment. It really is a good OS, but as stated, the GUI kills it.

And yes, 8 is noticeably faster than 7.

To me when I need 3rd party jazz to give my OS experience then it creases to be functional as a favorable OS at all. For that reason I can't really hate 8.x because I refuse to use it on my personal jazz. 8 does offer some job security though. I like things like aero flip. MS can take 8's aol looking gui and pack sand.
