Barking and Dagenham switches from Windows XP to Google Chromebooks, s

Google has scored a major win on the back of Microsoft’s Windows XP support cut-off, as the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has started a major migration project to Chromebooks and Chromeboxes ahead of the 8 April deadline.

The council was previously running 3,500 Windows XP desktops and 800 XP laptops, and is currently in the process of retiring these in favour of around 2,000 Samsung 303Cs Chromebooks and 300 Chromeboxes, mainly for meeting rooms, reception areas and libraries across the borough.

Barking and Dagenham has already rolled out around 350 of these Chromebooks to its staff, and expects to deploy the remaining machines by early June, partly driven by the XP support cut-off date.

That is a very ambitious plan. Retraining every employee on a new OS and programs. Fun! How hard could it be?
I hope no one here lives there and has a license renewal coming up!

I'm hoping to get in there so will report back. Been doing some One Oracle project work with LBBD!!

There is a lot of cross council IT work going on at the moment between about 6 London boroughs; if this is successful Google may get a considerable footprint across the different councils. I know Lambeth have just scrapped there XP machines.

Another advantage of Chromebook. When it breaks you just throw it away and get another one. Their not worth fixing.
I can see the next step. Telling all the employes we will no longer furnish Chromebooks you will have to buy your own. They are cheap.

Driving licences are handled in the UK by a central office the DVLA at Swansea in Wales. Car tax is purchased at the Local Post Office so the council mainly deals with housing, rates (tax on property) and numerous other issues and I suspect there will be some wonderful things lost in the bit bucket.

They are running citrix accounts on them to access the programmes they need. There isn't really that much training required. I doubt weather there will be that much impact

    Question.

Does Chromebook have enough security to handling all that personal information of the citizens?

Yes, but no newer OS would be able to print to a printer that is that old.

I guess Citrix handles the security.
