44 percent of Twitter users have never tweeted, says report

As I write this, I’ve tweeted close to 39,000 times. But according to one report, a large chunk of you have never sent a single tweet.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Twitter analytics company Twopcharts says that, according to its data, 44 percent of Twitter accounts have never tweeted. No “Trying out this Twitter thing.” No “Just setting up my tweetz.” Not even “Hi.” The Journal places Twitter’s userbase at 974 million accounts, so if you do the math, that’s roughly 429 million accounts that have been silent.

What are all those users doing? Some are likely just readers, others may have created an account, only to forget that it exists; still others may be in the “I don’t get Twitter what is this I don’t even” camp.

I'm in that category. I set up an account because of a friend, but have never used it.

Yup I'm one of those, but I have a live twitter feed open at all times on my main PC, i find it a really handy news source if you are following the right people/organizations.

I haven't checked for a while but I believe you need a tweeter account just to read tweets ?
After seeing this some time back I never thought again about Tweeter,
71% of all tweets are ignored - Neowin
Actually I thought the number of unread tweets was much higher ?
Still not much interested in tweeter but it's interesting to see the activity maps on events like elections...
    Totally wild

You don't need an account to read most tweets, some do have their accounts set to be private though.

That article is misleading, just because a tweet doesn't get a response or a retweet doesn't mean it was ignored. They can be read with no response.

I am not a Facebook or tweeter kind of guy.
My time is spent here in 7F, 9F and PC Help where I can trust the members on my Contacts/Friends list.
Guess I lead a boring life when it comes to internet chatting.

Same here. I'm only registered in a couple forums and I also lurk in a couple more forums. That's it.
