It's called kicking the problem upstairs. Often, the easiest way to get rid of an undesirable but otherwise competent employee is to promote her/him to another department. That gets the employee out of your hair and, with luck, the employee may screw up badly enough at the new job to become fireable.

That guy is just another "Idiot getting attention" as Gary said, they wanted a story and he gave them one.

As long as there is a market for PC's they will be around.

Also, I hope Bill Gates steps in and goes against this. I mean this would put MS at stake. What if Nokia never catches up?

Perhaps MS should also go into the refrigerator business, LG, for one, makes a "smart" one. They can't let that market fall out if their hands.

I put CNET in the same category as Gartner etc. The best use they can have is by generating natural gas due to the sheer volume of Bovine Excretia that seems to come from that particular stable.

Ms isn't going to abandon Office (its most successful product), or the zillions of dollars it has in maintenance contracts -- to say nothing of new business it has garnered by selling extended XP support to a few large sections of the business community.

Just because it has made an acquisition (NOKIA) - doesn't mean to say it abandons its (still HUGELY PROFITABLE) other stuff.

I think Ms should take a leaf out of Man. Utd's book and SACK ( US - fire / let go) the new VP or he could become V(ery) P(oisonous).

Cell phones don't replace PC. Just because people buy a fancy phone doesn't mean they wouldn't also buy and use a PC.
Is their some international law that states you can't use both and own both at the same time?

That's like saying if you make the best wrist watch people are going to buy them and throw away all the clocks in homes and businesses. No more clocks in government building either.

Jack's was good, Microsoft's was bad, whether it is strategy or logic. Einstein said "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

When you deal with the idiot public enough like I have, you realize people want one thing. The E for internet. Where is my internet? Could you install my internet?

The average public realized a giant desktop is no longer needed to do facebook and other content absorption sites. That is what most of the public does. Go on the internet. Sure they play games and use apps, but 99% of it requires or uses the internet.

Microsoft and other businesses are realizing that, (some much later then others) and are going where the money is. Cell phones are seen as ancient if more then a year old. People are treating tablets the same as well. So this means more device buying=more money.

The desktop is not going away, it will just not be owned by the average joe/public as much. Only a enthusiast like us or a content creator, or managing virtual machines, domains, companies etc. will be using desktops. They are not going away, their main original purpose is.

But in terms of windows on desktops that could be in trouble too. Steam is coming out with their own operating system, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. But my opinion is gamers will flock to it.

I know some businesses are using thin clients running Linux combined with citrix and running windows apps from the citrix server running on windows server. So windows might even become less of a need on business machines as well. And that could spell trouble if only their server editions are being bought.


In the end, I think the best thought to come from this is windows will be more secure, since the focus will be taken away from it. Threats follow the market share. Too many absent minded people do not think about malware on the IOS (especially apple devices-it just works) or android or windows phone devices. So they will not be expecting it. So when the payload hits and more and more hackers make that their main attention, operating systems like windows in my opinion will become more secure. And that is good for us, but not for the public.


I will say this, no one knows how everything will go down the next few years, but you can be sure for most people the desktop will not be a part of it.
