And there is one place where Win 8 loses me. I can't have a M$ account because to do so, M$ DEMANDS that I have all my cookies enabled; not just M$'s cookies but ALL cookies! It's my darned computer and

Did you misread or misunderstand my post? Steps I described in the post you quote tell exactly how
NOT to use Microsoft Account but use (or in case of upgrading 8 to 8.1) continue using a local account with absolutely no email address, Microsoft or any other connected to it. Exactly the same as the local user account in Windows 7.

No problems, this is something that confuses quite a number of users. You may set up a Windows 8 user account as a so called Microsoft Account but you don't have to, using a local account as in Windows 7 is totally fine. OK, with a local account you cannot use most of the windows Store Apps and Store itself without specifically logging in with an email address, but on the other hand you get more choices as you can set a different email address to be used with each app, whereas a user account tied to a Microsoft Account uses this email for Store and each app.
A funny thing I have noticed: In my real life social circles (a lot of geeks!) those who are most against using a Microsoft Account with Windows 8 often tell the main reason is that it is not Microsoft's business what they do with computers, they do not want MS to log their activities. Yet, those same users see no paradox in their use of iPhones and Android devices, it's OK for them to tie an email account to these devices, to get apps from store and so on or like in case of Android, the need to have a Google account even to get started with the device.

Got bored after Page 3, so have not read all responses. However, here's my tupennyworth: some people like Windows 8, many more do not. I am in the latter category, just could not get on with it. There are many more like me, which is why 7 is outselling 8 by a large factor. Does not make me or anyone of the same opinion, more or less intelligent or experienced in any way.
That's a fact, and another fact is that Kari said earlier in this thread that he was going to unsubscribe from this forum. Instead of which, war broke out.
It's all down to personal choice as individuals, why fight?

I find it quite odd that you kind of accuse me of the fight, that me not unsubscribing and continuing to post is the reason. I just read my posts in this thread through to check what i have said, and honestly all I can see is I complained about being categorized and have corrected false information.
Do you really mean that however false the given information is, Windows 8 is in your opinion so bad it should not be defended and false information should not be corrected?

Just before your post (#53) another member posted (#51) why she's against Windows 8, using an argument which is not true. If I had unsubscribed, that argument (need of an MS account) had not been corrected because most pro-Eight users understand better than me, to stay out from these biased discussions were only arguments against are accepted.
Say what you want to but that's really odd that for you, it had been better for me not to post a correction and really stay out from here than to post and correct false information which in itself could have caused an occasional browser of this thread to decide against Windows 8 if left uncorrected.

I don't use Android phones and iPhones, partially because of that (the big reason is I'm too cheap to pay that big monthly bill for a service I don't really need; heck, I barely use my talk only cell phone and land line).

Just because I admitted I was wrong about that one thing doesn't mean I suddenly like Win 8 now. I used it for a week on a friend's husband's computer last November because I had forgotten mine (old age sucks) and, despite his excellent tutelage (he is an IT tech and supervisor), I found it too confusing and cumbersome to use compared to Win 7 (and that wasn't just due the lack of a Start menu). I had no trouble going from XP to Win 7 and, overall, liked Win 7 better but trying to transition to Win 8 feels like trying to use a Mack truck a 5 speed main, four speed auxiliary, and no trailer to get groceries. Sure, you can do it but not as easily and efficiently as drive a car with an automatic. There is a reason why businesses upgrading from XP chose Win 7 over Win 8.
