We are but eternal optimists Steve but if recent past performances are any indication, I'm not holding my breath. Bugger me, they get near perfection with W7 and now want to fry us all.

Hi there

"Near Perfection" is like "The end of the Rainbow" you'll never actually reach it. -- W7 was brilliant for the hardware at the time -- there's NEWER hardware out there and like everything else an OS needs to reflect newer hardware.

Would you for example even THINK of using a NEW car that didn't have ABS brakes - that's not to say you still can't use and enjoy the older systems ( and cars !!)..

W7 like XP before it was great for its period (and for some of you STILL IS) but for others who want to use newer hardware with Touch, possibly also with some "eye recognition" and biometric security devices - to say nothing of future hardware then you should at least CONSIDER a modern OS.

I think actually from what I've seen so far Windows 9 might even attract a few W7 diehards too.

Cheers
jimbo

Well, maybe I'm naďve,
but, I was hoping they learned something from 8, where they made a phone/tablet OS and tried to port it to the desktop. There was a lot of negative reviews in the Win 8 previews, and they ignored it. That cost them much more than they are willing to admit. I am an optimist that they won't go down that road again. There is little doubt that Microsoft has a bunch of smart people there. Smart people learn from their mistakes. If they do that it will be at least a fairly good OS. If they keep with their kids theme and try to port another phone OS to the desktop, Microsoft will be badly damaged. If you see Vista, which was not well received, but they made it into 7, which was the best OS they ever produced, it still took some time for them to recover from Vista, and it's still mentioned today, but they did recover and recovered very well. They have that opportunity right now, to use 9 to recover from 8. I'm seriously hoping they use 9 just like they used 7, and come out with a great OS. But, if they try to port a touch screen phone OS to the desktop again, they will be in very big trouble, and may have a lot of trouble recovering, in my opinion. Once they can have the vision to see that there is a difference in a phone/tablet OS and a desktop OS, and they are two different things, they will find success.

If they keep the vision that your phone, tablet and desktop should look and act the same, they are in serious trouble. They are not the same and never will be. I know there are people here that like 8 very much, and I am happy for them and I am not an 8 hater. I have a windows phone that I like very much, but it just does not work for me on a desktop. If it works for you, that's great and I'm honestly happy for you. It is just not for me and even Microsoft seems to be abandoning it. That gives me hope for 9, that it will be more of a 7 than an 8, or at least give us options. I shouldn't have to go get third party apps to make it work as a desktop OS, as most people have. For those who think I am someone who just hates 8 and never tried it, I have used every 8 that came out including the Developer's preview, and have 8.1 in a VM on this machine and a used to be 8 now 8.1 on a laptop that I use. I also have a Windows 8 phone. So, I'm not in that category. And yes, I can use every one of them. I really like the Windows Phone, but find everything I want to do on either desktop, more difficult to do, but I can do most everything. So, I'm hoping 9 will be more of 7 and less of 8, and they give us choices of how it will look and act. That's just my opinion, everyone is entitled to their own. I know there are quite a few people on here that are quite happy with 8. I'm genuinely happy for them, it's just not for me. That's just my opinion.

They will recover from 8 anyway...Windows 9 will be hybrid for desktop Pc and Touch devices and i do not think it will change now that Windows 8.1 had makes its proof on the market.

Was looking quickly at some 21,5" & 23" Touch screen (10 points touch) monitors and saw that they came down on prices a lot compare a year and half ago. Which can lead me to upgrade my actual monitor if it happens Windows 9 could satisfied me.

The main problem with a Desktop PC like we use with Windows 7 is that the touch sreen will be more of something to play around or just to quickly access to a settings, but i doubt i will use it to control my everyday browsing/computing and time to time gaming with a screen that is nearly set flat on my desk and will force me to stand-up to access in a comfortable way the screen.

I do not want my Desktop to look like a phone from Tory R Us.

I do not want to use a 3rd party hack or program to keep my Desktop looking like a computer.
Replacing my Desktop icons with blotches of colored squares is dumb and very ugly. Who decided that icons were a bad thing and needed replaced on a Desktop. After all those big blotchy colored squares are nothing but a icon for 3 year olds.
I have 34 icons on my Desktop. What the hell would my Desktop look like with that many colored squares. I will tell you. A eye sore of various colors.
I want the ability to stop all that mess completely on my Desktop using Windows 9 and not a 3rd party work around.

I'm somewhat up to date on hardware and don't really need a new operating system.
When I do go to a new operating system it won't be because it's new it will be because it's new and better.
I'm not a expert in anything about computers. I don't travel the world carrying my computer and most people aren't and don't. Most people are home or business users or both.
I thinking that Windows 8 proved that most people don't want the Toy look.
That being said; keep the option for those that do want the Toy look.
If it has to be a separate operating system so be it.

This B/S that a computer has to look like a Toy to be able to use todays and tomorrows new hardware is just that B/S.

This works for me. What is the problem.

The colored squares can be resized from tiny to x-large and moved on welcome screen to your entire desire, which had pleased me because you can lower their impacts on how your eyes come with the screen for...

See how i'm trying hard to believe this way...seems like we will have no other choices if wanted to stay with MS.
