Microsoft will give computers with the swipe and poke screens to schools and the kids will grow up thinking their is nothing else to be used. Keyboard and a mouse will be strange things to them.
Things like updates or msconfig ect will be some kind of strange language to them.
Security patches will be answered with; what the hell are security patches.
That is exactly what Microsoft wants. Microsoft want their customers to be young and dumb. If 2+2 still = 4, the young and dumb will become older and dumb and buy anything Microsoft throws at them.

Microsoft for decades gave Windows to schools or at a huge discount. It's not because they have a big heart.
Once you indoctrinate these young minds that the only computing method is Microsoft and their products that is what they will buy when they get older.

The same thing will happen with the poke and swipe computing. Indoctrinate enough young minds and you have just created your future market.

Young and dumb>older and dumb>poke and swipe= New Market.

Most the problems with Microsoft devices is they are not dependable so schools will usually opt for ipads.. for the reliability factor,
But yea for devices like the slate those mostly went to third/ four world countries good write off for a crappy can't sell device

    Hi there

Actually Robotics is where a lot of the future lies --from exploring space, future manufacturing, possibly transportation and certainly nano technology integrated with biology, and of course A.I

Ms is quite a decent (often unrealized) player in this activity.

I for one would certainly love say a Holographic TV screen -- or even a full blown "Star trek like " Holodeck. These will of course appear in the future - and maybe much sooner than people think. The main limitation isn't most of the hardware - but in the lack of compute power -- no doubt Intel etc are working to fix that problem right now.

Have a look at the beginning of the film Paycheck where the Screen is removed FROM the image of the nice young lady or the ideas presented in the ORIGINAL version of Total Recall --not the rubbish recent remake.

Don't throw your Ms Stock away -- Ms is Light years ahead of The Fruit Company in these endeavours.

The next 25 years will be incredibly exciting (and could be worrying too if not handled properly as possibly 100,000's or millions of low paid repetitive jobs are handed over to Robots).

(Real good HUMAN Bar tenders though - whatever the state of automation in the future will still always be wanted and appreciated !!)

Ms also learned wisely from "The Jesuits" -- A Missionary Catholic order --- Grab them Young that way you keep them when they are older so Ms giving a lot of assistance to Schools is only following an old and well trusted practice. The benefits of bringing computing etc into the classroom early though IMO far outweigh the disadvantages --and in any case it's natural for youngsters to rebel as the grow older anyway so "indoctrination" at a young age doesn't usually transpire into a life long addiction to the product.

    Cheers

Wow Layback, you have pretty much described how religion works. This methodology has been used successfully by religions for thousands of years.

I always thought Apple dominated in schools, at least in the K-12 grades?

Science fiction has always envisioned future computing without keyboard and mouse. How can future computing be cool if people are still using mice and keyboards?

Originally, Commodore (CBM) dominated schools but decided there was no future in that market and abandoned it. Apple swooped in to fill the void. CBM also abandoned its Commodore 8 and 16 bit users to put all its efforts into the Amiga (actually, a pretty good computer, especially for graphics), despite the fact that the C64 was the best selling computer of all time. We all know what happened to CBM. IBM filled that void.

As far as Science Fiction depicting computers without a keyboard and mouse goes, there is a reason its called fiction.
