That was interesting, I managed to get 10 installed by using this media tool.
How to Upgrade to Windows 10 From Windows 7 or 8
If you run windows, you get the tool, if you run linux, you get a download link.
Anyway it installed ok on top of windows 7 ultimate, took some time.
But then I looked at activation and it says was not activated?
So it will install but wont be activated for me. So did a test, I ran the date to 2018 to see what will happen with an unactivated copy. So far nothing happens. Right now playing a DVD with VLC player. Idea of this PC is use it at the boat just to play DVD's.
To activate you must first upgrade a qualifying product, once your Win7/8 has been updated it will automatically activate and you will be able to do a fresh install which the MSFT activation servers will recognize the hardware and activate without any need for a key.
Yes, makes sense since that win 7 was not activated. I mostly did this to see what win 10 looks like, not that I need win 10.
It seems so far nothing negative happens running an unactivated 10.
What is supposed to happen running an unactivated 10?
Where I plan to use is on the boat, will have no internet, my standalone DVD player broke, so thought why not use this old extra PC, an optiplex 755 mini tower thin business PC. Or I could put linux on it. It wil sit right behind the LED TV, perfect spot better than the DVD player which used up space.

Are you saying you upgraded windows 7 ultimate that legally activated to windows 10 but 10 won't activate? I didn't think changing the date of your computer would effect the activation. In fact, windows 10 defaults to checking the time server after you upgrade even it is was disabled on the system you upgraded from.
Dont know exactly how the activation works, but it is running just fine win 10 right now even with date set to 2018. I was thinking if there was a time constraint on running unactivated advancing the date would show it. I
It seems you can install 10 over top of 7 even if 7 is not activated.
Supposedly, I can rollback to win7 for 30 days, I still see that option, so changing the system date had no effect either. I will just let it sit for a day with year 2018 and see if anything happens.
Adding this,
I put the date back to 2015, and it now puts an Activate Windows link on the desktop, which telegraphs thru all running apps.
Adding some more,
I rebooted with time set correctly, and the Activate windows message is gone.

Oh well....
Attempted today and again with the media creation tool the "Upgrade" by creating an ESD/ISO dvd (not that usb wasn't working well :))...this one has included the latest cumulative patch kb3081444 and i took the AMD Catalyst v15.7.1 hotfix (v15.200.1062.1004) with me.
It hasn't really worked again...but i manage being on desktop again (w/VGA BasicDisplay.sys) and see that the Windows 10 License key was still activated.
I tried to install the Catalyst hotfix while on desktop but it BSOD with atikmpag.sys and black screen came back on reboot.
Safe Mode didn't help much more, though! Installed proper the Catalyst again but after reboot, atikmpag.sys BSOD twice & still on black sreen.
So far what i have tried:
*Direct Upgrade from Windows Update,
*Upgrade at boot with official downloaded ISO Pro/Home Dvd (no activation)
*ESD/USB Upgrade setup
*ESD/ISO Dvd Upgrade setup...
None have worked for me, even if at each time i took care of the newer cumulative patches and different AMD drivers.
Rolled back to Windows 7 fine again (after hours!!). It just took me an hour or so to fix and troubleshoot the rollback!!
My last resort is now to Clean Install i guess, but it also mean risking my 7 retail key and go ahead AMD drivers BSOD.
I'm quite frustrated of this situation!
Chances are you might have activation issues after too

I'm reading that...how would i know if i'm not going through it!
Looks factory pre-installed are the worst to get through the Clean Install activation. Saw aswell gregrocker MVP tellling it could be fixed by some of MS Team Support, sooner or later.
Been few weeks between my first activation and my latest license activation today...hope it counts for the MS Server.

Yep all it needs is more time NoN
I'm sure in a month or 2 bugs/ drivers.... will be ready
There is a fish tell that making a system image or clone you can still upgrade it and use both installs
Obviously not at the same time
Sounds fishy but that is the rumor I've read and Grego said the same thing :/
