I don't bother hiding most of these 10 updates because they return so I just leave them in the Optional updates queue to collect dust

I missed this one, because it was not in the optional section, but important section

Probably because your update settings are off

You must Uncheck Give me Recommended updates the same as Important updates

Then All optional and recommended updates are put in the optional category :)
Then only true Important updates are in that section.

Yup, thought I did that, but apparently not.

I was thinking that the Windows 10 updates had been a bit quiet recently.

    Did I jinx it??

MS are going to keep doing this until 2020.

The only thing that will stop them is if this creates a huge backlash against W10 and people stop installing it (like the W8 series).

I may be delusional, bot I have found that these updates install themselves regardless of the update settings. They come disguised as Important, Recommended, and Optional. I have always had settings just to notify me. One day they will be sitting there 'gathering dust' as you say, and then *poof* they are installed. I never see it occur, so I really don't know how it's happening. Perhaps I have missed one that has been installed and it is opening the door for the others. Knowing M$ as I do, this would not surprise me. Man I'm getting really tired of this nonsense.

I noticed something at the bottom of the Windows Update (see image) that may account for this:
