The latest preview release of Windows 10 includes the first glimpse of a new feature designed to eliminate one specific activation headache. When this change rolls out to the general public next month, you'll be able to use your Windows 7 or 8.1 product key to complete a Windows 10 upgrade.

Why they didn't implement this in the first place, I'll never understand.

I see in the comments section people are complaining about "giving up" their Windows 7/8 key.
Nowhere have I read you will be "giving up" your original key. They're giving you an upgrade using your original key. They're not taking the original key away from anyone.

Ah, what a cynical world we live in these days

On windows 7 Oem Slp machines you could use the OEM key on the back/bottom of your computer. I still see a few activation headaches unless Microsoft resets everyone's keys.
